Hi Everyone,
I have budgeted to buy the 997 C2. But, before I pay the deposit I would appreciate advice whether I am making the right decision. My budget is only up to C2 so a C2S is a no no. I have driven both and foud the Cayman a better and easier to handle. But, I prefer the 997 looks and shape. I'm very confuse.....need help...

If you've never owned a 911, buy the 997 and get it out of your system. [Although, some would say the last of the iconic 911s was in 1998.]
Having already moved well past 911 envy, IMO the CS is the more satisfying driver's sportscar; the 911 (other than the GT3) having become a very fine GT aimed at its predominant demographic - mature gentlemen.
Since they're both commodities, go with your emotions - which one would you spend time in your garage sitting on a lawn chair admiring. Sounds like for you that's the 997. If/when the infatuation wears off, you can always choose what'll light your fire from the driver's seat.

I had a 997 (2005) which was a great car...but I traded it for a 2010 cayman s and I wil never own a 911 variant again...I feel the cayman platform is so much better, unless you need back seats.....my .02

Alrhough I would highly recommend the CaymanR, I think STLPCA is on point in your case.
The Cayman is a very dynamic platform, great daily driver and track performer. As a dual purpose car, it realky is perfect.

I faced the same question. I personally don't like the looks of the cayman at all. Yet I still bought it. I found it more fun to drive. Coming from a 993TT and an E55, I find that both cars are in need of more power.
In the end, the Cayman is a very cheap car (bought my 08 for ~$49k in 08 with only 1800 miles), very fun and capable, and even much more usable considering the 2 trunks.
So - if you find yourself driving more than looking at it - choose the Cayman S - then either put a turbo or X51 in it.

I have owned five 911 variants over the past 20 yrs or so, including most recently a 996 TT and a 996 GT3. My current car, an 02 Boxster S is my favorite of them all in terms of driving dynamics, and ability to enjoy the driving experience without feeling like I'm on the edge of disaster (996 GT3-fun car but scary!). I track my Boxster 1-2 times/month and absolutely have a ball with it. Insanely fun! Before you give up on the Cayman looks, check out some of the Interseries Caymans. IMO they rival the GT3 race cars in terms of beauty. Of course it is hard to beat the looks of a GT3 RS street car! Tough decision. Nice problem to have.

I think given the two, the CS is the no-brainer. When I did my last round of car buying it was either the C2S or a CS and after driving both back to back, I chose a gen 2 CS hands down. It's just such a great platform that I feel like there should be no comparison.
Now if we're talking CS or 997.2 GT3, that's a whole 'nuther kettle 'o fish.

Having just bought a 2007 CS after my 2004 C4S was totaled, I readily agree with most of the preceding posts. The 911 is really a grand touring car, and the C4S may be the best of them (although I've never driven a turbo, and sure would like to). The Cayman CS, on the other hand, is a real sports car, and is definitely more fun to drive, IMHO. I was concerned that it might not be as comfortable on the slab as the heavier C4S, but it really is fine, and is entirely suitable for long distance traveling. For many years I thought the back end of a wide body 911 was the prettiest car in the world, and I still love it. While I was worried about the fact that I started out not particularly liking the looks of the Cayman (especially the back end), I've really come to love it, and it's aesthetics please me now as much as the C4S ever did. The bottom line is that, all in all, I'm happier with the CS than I was with the C4S . . .

I have both a Cayman (2.9 but I have had a Cayman S in the past) and a 997.2. The quick and the dirty is they are both great cars and also very different cars. The Cayman interior is more compact yet you get two lockable and "out of sight" trunks. It is much more of a sports car. Drive a lot like my '83 Sc a real fun car. The 997.2 is a beast and a hot rod. More interior room and great for trips. both cars handle well and are very comfortable. to pick one or the other ... don't want to or have to. The Cayman is outstanding and the 997 classic. If the next 911 is as the spy photos and date show it will be bigger and somewhat softened from the current 997 hope this helps

Thanks to everyone for your reply. Decided to wait for the new 911 instead. This is not going to be my first Porsche as I had a 964 C2 before. Currently owned a 2011 Cayenne S, A8 and E92 335i.
The Cayman or 997 was suppose to replace the E92....
