actually cayman s IS faster than 997, and very very very close to 997S.
now 997S x51 is a different story, i ran with one last week, i was on throttle so hard that my foot almost went through the floor.

If I would walk in a dealer and had that kind of money, I would ask the salesman for a light weight "raw" car but I can't afford a GT3. Now what is available for my budget. And the salesman would say; "well my friend we have the baby GT3 2 seater or for the same price, you can have a more confort 2+2 with all the gadgets 911".
I know my scenarios are cheezy but I'm sure you get the point.

Cway, your logic is correct to some degress however, if cayman RS had similar motorm, tranny, lsd to GT3RS. quite a few RS buyers will scrap RS and go with cayman RS, i for sure will be.
also, RS is going to have much smaller production number than 997's. when you make cayman as an equal alternative to 997, a lot of ppl will will have 2nd thoughts about 997's.
back in 944turbo days. some hardcore will buy history and 911 carerra. but when they are both new 944 will run circles around 911 carerra and many ppl for right or wrong reasons boght 951's and 911 sales was cannibalized.
but that said, i hope i am way wrong and cay RS will be a reality.

Hmmm mooty... I recently read an old Road & Track article from the 80's comparing lap and acceleration times of 944T and 911 Carrera, and to my surprise the 911 Carrera was faster. But the editors *liked* the 944T better and it was cheaper.
Of course, I can't account for the endless number of variables that might have altered the lap times: e.g., Carerra had better tires; Carrera was broken in and 944T wasn't; Porsche N.A. might have hand picked particular cars to assure a certain outcome; etc. etc.
For a company that won't sell a 997 w/o a sunroof, it "feels" unlikely that the Cayman RS will be a reality. In the old days, the 964 RS was cheaper than a standard 964 C2; those days are sadly long behind us but gladly Porsche is in excellent financial shape and should continue to build excellent cars.

dr car. my thoughts are the mag are comparing lap time from diff test. it's very hard to imagine a stock carerra to be faster than stock 951. of course i could be totally wrong, but i just think it's hard.
i like to have a cay RS, but a real RS. dropping 100lbs means nothing. i can easily do that to my car and still look fully furnished. now dropping 500 lbs is different. also, i dont expect they put a super motor in there, but at the very least put in a LSD, adj sway bars. but in all seriousness, i dont see PAG put adj suspesnion, sway, or lighten much wt on this car ;-(

If I want something light with no fuss I will go with RS. A good budget will buy you a cayman RS and if you have an extremly good budget, get a GT3 or GT3 RS.
Why would the Cayman hurt the sales of 997 and 997S?? With all the gadgets added every generation and comfort feel, I would consider them GT cars just like the jaguar XK8 or BMW 6 series.
911 are not what they use to be and I really don't think a Cayman RS would hurt the 997 or 998 just like stated earlier with the 951 and 911.

I think the reality is that Porsche will not let a Cayman be faster than a 911 in similar trim and exclusivity levels. In other words...
Base Cayman < 911 Base
Cayman S = 911 Base < 911S (obviously approximately)
Cayman RS = 911S < 911GT3
I still think it's a possibility to see a dry-sump, detuned version of the 3.8 in a Cayman RS. Or a revved up, dry-sump version of the 3.6. HP numbers could be 320-330 and built in limited numbers. The interior could be quite spartan as to not cannibalize regular 911 sales. It would be in an entirely different market segment than the 911 Carerra and 911 Carerra S and also be limited in production. I really don't see anything from Porsche that makes me think they outright WOULDN'T do it. But I don't know that they will either.
