cway, your estimate is more or less close. but the donar car is more than 60k b/c GTR has PCCB.
if i were using my car as weekend toy, i would get GTR. but my car is used only on track and to/from track. i need the car to be more or less stock so i can run with my friends and compared lap times. if i have GTR. i will blow by most of them (or i should blow by them) then it woudn't be fun. now, to catch some of my buddies 996's or 997's i have to work my butt off and that is fun for me.
however, i feel the GTR is a really good package. it may be a bit over the top, but hey, if you really build one yourself (without farnbachers) it will cost you more money, headaches, and pains.
however, icon is pretty seroius about it though.

the motor (non-X51 at least) must be well under $20K given there is at least one company that will do the swap for around $20K.
BTW - For a street-only Cayman S, I'd just supercharge it.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but would it be more economical to put a 3.8 in a base Cayman (used, of course) or a Cayman S. Other necessary upgrades would include, what, brakes (can use steel and save $$), susp, tranny?? Swap the wheels out. I mean, could one theoretically get a base Cayman in 18 months for 35k, and do this mod and end up with a very stealth and great track car for 75k? Or am I way off? How much if you used a used low miles motor from a crashed car?

first, you need 6 speed.
if you get base cayman it is 5 speed, unless you get pasm. many dont like pasm.
the price quoted abouve is new crate motor. if you find someone who's willing to do used motor conversion for you, yes, it will be less money.
the int of cayman isn't the same as cayman s. really look at it.
the price of farbacher also include pccb which is 8k or so.
the brakes on cayman is not the same as cayman S. so if you really add everything together apple to apple, it's not that much difference. i did this exercise no less than 100x, LOL.
