Non S Cayman information
#2
I just found out the base price for the new Cayman (non-S) is $50,095 or about halfway between a Boxster and a Boxster S. I guess Porsche is either trying to steer customers to the Boxster or the MZ4 instead (MZ4 is $2K less).

I saw an MZ4 Coupe moving for the first time on Speed Channel's 'BMW Test Drive.' It isn't as butt ugly as it seems in pictures. The non-M coupe has 255 hp and costs 10k less than the non-S Cayman.

10k is one hell of a premium over a "similar" BMW.
I have to think sales of the Cayman are going to be pretty bad. They priced themselves out of the market. I figure 90% of those that wanted a hard top boxster and had $$$ got a Cayman S. They knew it was over priced, but got it anyway. Really if 10k not that much more money why not just get Cayman S. If you are on a budget like I'd expect most Cayman lookers to be it is really hard ot justify. If you just want too "look" cool you have the boxster with same performance, but with an open top all for less money.
Pricing SHOULD have been as such
Cayman 2.7L 5k LESS than Boxster 2.7L
Cayman S 3.4l 5k LESS than Boxster S 3.4L
Cayman GT 3.6L "GT style car probably with wet sump 3.6L for cost containment" Current cost of Cayman S

This doesn't seem to agree with the Porsche flyer shown above which states under $50,000. If it is over 50 they've absolutely over-priced it. Too bad.

I just messed around on kbb.com to see how a Z4/MZ4 or Cayman/Cayman S would stack up if optioned the way I want them optioned. Basically, all I want is sport seats, HID Headlamps, and the top-of-the-line stereo. For the non-S Cayman I used option prices from the Cayman S plus the base price to determine final price.
Z4 Coupe
255 h.p.
6-speed
Sport Pkg (so as to get the M sport seats)
HID Headlamps
12 speaker stereo (standard)
18" wheels (w/sport pkg)
$43,295
Cayman
245 hp
5-speed
HID Headlamps (1090)
Stereo ($1600)
Sport Seats ($760)
18" wheels standard???
$53,545
Cayman-S
295 h.p.
6-speed
HID Headlamps (1090)
Stereo ($1600)
Sport Seats ($760)
18" wheels standard
$63,145
MZ4
330 h.p.
6-speed
Premium Pkg (in order to get the top-of-the-line stereo)
$53,495
It is interesting the way they stack up. The Bimmer is 10k less for either the Z or M. Or other way to look at it is for the same money I can get another gear and 95 more hp. I might be able to do without the Premium Pkg on the MZ4 and losing that would drop $2500 from the MSRP. Sure the Z4 Coupe is ugly. But 95 extra horses can cover some sins.

I don't buy cars to Look cook either, but lets face it. Alot of other people do. They may not be on rennlist, but those folks have bought many many Porsche's over the years keeping the company going.

also, dont just compare msrp of porsche vs bmw. i have owned both marques. my personal expereince is that i get much smaller discounts on bmw and far far bigger on porsches (other than GT3). your experience may be different though.

Uh huh.... I thought so. Looks - styling - may be at the bottom of the priority list but I doubt that it isn't on the list at all unless you are buying the car to be used as a track appliance only.

You have to love that the Canadian price is $70k, versus the US list of $50k.... that is a 1.4 currency conversion...
If I use a conversion higher then 1.2, I get called a thief by my customers. So, in essence, between the dealer and Porsche, they are bleeding Canadians for an extra $10k for this car.
I guess this is why the only pre-owned cars I can find here are silver exterior, black interior with no options.

Dave,
I guess I did not state that right. How a car looks does play a role in why I may or may not purchase it. My point was that some folks buy cars for the "Look at me, I am so cool with my wonderwagon!"
