Brake Pads???
Does the Cayman use the same pads as the Boxster S?
I bought some Pagid RS4-4 Orange and they don't fit! The shape is right but they are too thick to slide in! (And I did compress the calipers so don't ask)
Anyone else experience this? Can I sand them down to fit?

I always use Castrol SRF. Its more expensive, but you will not needt change it for 2 years and will never need to bleed the brakes in that time. It is the best brake fluid on the planet

_________
not sure about boxster S, but it's the same as 997 (non S).
yes, take the spyder out. if your rotor is newish, you really got to push the piston 100% flush to the caliber. i run pagid yellows.
motul 600 here. i am chicken so i bleed after every event.

Matt: The OE 987 Boxster S and Cayman S pads have the same part number, so I think you have the right pads. The Pagids must run a little thick, as the Hawks I got fit fine, even with the backing plate. Was your silver Cayman at VIR this past weekend? I stopped and talked to the guy with it, and he showed me the Pagid Orange pads that wouldn't fit. Then I went back to my group and watched four of them try to fit a set of Pagid Oranges into the calipers of a track prepared 944. They couldn't get them in, not even with a hammer (get the big hammer), and, once hammered half way in, had a hell of a time getting them back out. There were 7 Caymans on the entry list at VIR. I saw a yellow, a blue, and at least 4 silvers, including mine.
Jim,
I had my Cayman there Sunday afternoon only (it is silver - I was #130). I didn't see the blue one there but I did see the yellow one and 4 silver ones. I did get the Pagid Oranges to fit on Saturday night. I took the anti-vibration plates out and really compressed the calipers and they just fit.
I was there on Friday with my yellow GT3, but I think I broke the pressure plate, so I went home Saturday and came back Sunday with the Cayman. It was a blast at VIR. The brakes still faded pretty badly on the front and back straights so I had to tone it down a little. I still had the stock fluid in. I will change that this week. But the Cayman felt more planted through the climbing esses than my GT3. I carried just as much if not more speed through there than with my GT3.
I was turning 2:18's according to my sport chrono display and that was with traffic in the white group. (I normally run in red) I think I could drop 2 - 3 seconds off pretty easily. I will see next time.
I was only doing 2:10's in my GT3 on slicks because of traffic even in red on Friday. (My best is 2:06) So for the Cayman to be doing 2:18's in traffic with fading brakes says something.
Also, I can't remeber if I turned on the sport mode. I think it was on normal setting, but I'm really not sure. (I was hurrying to get to grid and just forgot about it).

Good to hear that you got the Pagids in to enjoy the Cayman. 2:18s are indeed fast under the circumstances. I never time myself, but I'm pretty sure that my times didn't approach that. I know that I got 9 mpg on track, and the gas station I used went from $2.71 to $2.86 per gallon in anticipation of the NASCAR crowd coming in. I was slow on Friday; a sitting duck for most others in Black. When I went out Saturday morning, I was much smoother and faster, so I came away satisfied. I think the quick throttle response takes a learning curve. I experienced brake fade too; about 15-20 minutes into each session. I thought it might be the Hawk pads, or air in the lines (I have ATE Blue fluid), but if you also experienced fade with the Pagids, we might need some air ducting toward the brakes. The climbing esses are the car's forte. I'm sure I went faster than I ever have through that section.
Jim et al.
Got to play with one of the other silver Caymans on Sunday. First they passed me then I caught up to him. You're right about the uphill esses. The Cayman looks very planted and smooth going through there but I caught him going into 10. When we got through Oak Tree he would pull away from me rather easily maybe getting 150 feet in front of me by the braking point but I was able to brake later (no fade) and harrass him through Hog Pen !!

when i had stock fluid, it faded big time, on a track that doesn't demand much on braking.
with pagid yellow and motul 600, at laguna seca (heavy on braking), the cayman brakes never faded.

I read this thread and scratch my head, Brakes fading????
It is my opinion that the problem more than likley in your braking technique than the brakes themselves!
I've driven Laguna, Barber Motorsports, Road America, Willow, and have never had a problem with fade using stock from the factory setup in 996, 997 and 997S.
Porsche brakes are the best out of the box system supplied in any production car.
