Default Cayman Targa?

My dealer (font of lies and deceitfulness) claims there's a Cayman Targa (as in lift out panel) in the works.

Any truth in this? Any spy pics?

That would be pretty cool. Kinda like the gigantic sunroof on the 944? That would be pretty sweet. I thinking I am just going to sit out on these until you can pick them up used off warranty and put a larger engine in there and an LSD

It would be surprising to see a full "targa" car ala 914. A sunroof like the 944 could be an interesting option. The whole non-sunroof was to ensure rigidity wasn't it? Going targa just sounds like it would make it too close to a Boxster.

Kind of defeats the purpose I think ... completely kills the rigidity of the car ... which separates it from the Boxster.

That's not necessarily true. If all they do is cut out some of the sheet-metal on the roof and add a piece of glass, there would be virtually no change in rigidity. If the do a targa like the older 911's, 'vette, NSX, Elise, etc, then yeah, it will suffer big time.

It could be possible like the 924/944 targa..... the roof does not allow a sun roof so get the owners to lift it out a panel and put it in the boot if they want air....alternatively you could buy a boxster.

id love to see a cayman targa 914 style, it would be pretty cool, but i agree that it would be too flexible...might as well get a boxster

A Cayman Targa sounds like it would be a gorgeous car. Imagine having a view like this in the Cayman.

They could improve on the notably rounder shape of the roof with the right Targa style.

Id like a Targa roof a la 944. Im sure with some engineering it could have a minimal impact on the rigitity. I love the roof on my 951, nothing like driving a twisty mountain road at sunrise with the windows down and the roof off. Done that quite a few times now, to me that is one of the essences of a fantastic drive. I bet what they could just do is use some carbon fiber rods or beams that join the two sides of the roof. Carbon fiber has been used in Porsche Motorsport strut bars, so it seems to work. Wouldnt do much to stop the roof caving in in a rollover, so aluminum or something similar might be a better fit.
