If you'd rather attack me personally than deal with my comments, I guess that would make you the "troll."

ok, namecalling get us nowhere, you're not a troll... i shared my experience, sorry if that hijacked the thread -

My initial impressions of the 987/997 are that the quality is higher than 986/996 models, in which case that's a step in the right direction... Anyone here compared the two generations and have impressions to share?

I did. The 987 is an improvement on the 986. Same as the 997 is an improvement on the 996, as the 996 is an improvement on the 993, as the 993 is an improvement on the 964.

Poor Pcar. You must think the whole world is crazy and you're the only sane one left.

Yeah .. you could have saved us all by posting this a few pages back.

I thought this thread started out talking about good looking cars and hot chicks, and it ends up being a pissing contest between old farts and young punks (no disrespect to either camp!!) .. what gives? Can someone move it to the General->Off Topic forum or what.

Maybe I overstated the case slightly - I don't think you're insane for loving thenew Pcars, they're still GOOD cars. When the new generation came out I had blind loyalty to the brand and I didn't question the new direction they took either. Then when my bad experience with the boxster was echoed by a few others (both people I knew, and some rennlisters alike), I wrote them off.

I still think they replaced "great cars" with "good cars," but that's my opinion.

And also imho, the 964 is probably slightly better quality than the 993 overall.

well maybe the 986/996 quality wasn't as good because it was a first time for Porsche with the watercooled flat 6 engines in a production car as well as a first for the Boxster. Up until the 993, the aircooled engine was pretty much a tried and true design that worked so they kept it. So I guess they learned from their mistakes with the 986/996 and we have something to look forward to with the 987/997????

Maybe so - my hope is, that with the Cayenne and upcoming "Panamera," Porsche has enough of a profit stream from their SUV/Sedan lines that they can bring back their old mantra "Quality comes first, we'll worry about numbers later" with the sportscars!

So here's a question for you 987/997 guys - has anyone figured out how to permanently disconnect PSM? From what I've heard, even when you turn it off, if you brake suddenly it kicks back in automatically... is this true?

Porsche Owners Club has approved a Boxster Spec class, so obviously they feel it is reliable enough for track use. Might not have a dry sump engine, but it's certainly as bulletproof as we all expect a Porsche to be. I've been tracking mine for 2 years without a single technical problem or wear issue other than tires. Driving to the track, then tootling around a track for a couple of days, then driving back home in the same car the same day it was at the track - that's what a Porsche has ALWAYS been about, and since all of us can do that, and enjoy ourselves, why in the hell would we argue over who is right and who is wrong on opinions???

having owned an 05 boxster S, and with another on order, the quality of my first one was truly outstanding, just about perfect, and quite a value - for the price i didnt expect such quality.

thinking back, i havent had a problem in my last 10 porsches, except such trivial ones as loose sways in the gt2's and 3's and bad factory alignments -- and the weird intermittent grinding sound my wife gets in her CT. i also think the excess computer crap in the CT ruins user quality thru un-needed user MB/BMW like complexity: eg. i have tried to set the back doors to unlock with the front 4 times and just gave up.

before that one of my TT's was delivered with a poorly fitted bonnet and rick perkins immediately approved factory replacement. back in the 90's there were more issues.

please also take note that other owners agree, P's #2 in the JDpower new car quality survey, whilst MB is down there with Kia and VW

Just to add fuel to the fire, there's a whole generation of Pcar owners out there who swear that Porsche "died" in 1965 with the end of the 356. Whatever......

By the way, my anger is directed not only at new Porsche owners but also at Porsche itself - I'm not trying to pick on Boxster or 996 owners, I almost bought one myself - but after hearing all the horror stories I thought better of it.

This isn't a personal attack on you. My whole thing is do you really have hands on experience with a Boxster S (or any new Porsche) or are you just going by what your "friend" says??? You caused quit a stir once again with your strong opinion. I just don't know if its genuine hands on experience or hearsay. Quite bitter for a "Moldy fig" at 24. By the way, you have been banned once, time to slow up.

mooty,
Thanks for your valuable input (in this and past posts). I also appreciate your humor in a thread that, at times, looses its standard civility .

Best Regards,

FormulaRx,
You've GOT to try the S before you make a final judgement!
Enjoy your search!
