2005 boxster s - buzzing noise at 3k rpms
Hi Folks,
Got my S a few weeks ago now and its great fun. One quirk I noticed is that if I'm in first gear, and I ease on the throttle and take it to about 3k rpms (I'm maybe doing 20-25mph at this point) I notice a funny buzzy high pitched rattling sound, kind of like a buzz saw or something that is vibrating that isn't supposed to be.
Is this normal? Right at 3k then at 3.1k it goes away... thought maybe it was cams coming on...
Its been making this noise since new (20miles) and now it has 450 miles.
Anyone else notice this?
Thanks
Jester

I had a similar problem with an older Miata and an older MR2. In both cases it turned out to be a heatshield that was loose. Might want to investigate along those lines.

I get a rapid rattle, at around 2k RPM regardless of gear. It goes on for less than a second whenever I past 2k RPM, and only when the engine is cold. Nothing happens when the car is warm. Must be some kind of valve that opens and closes when the engine is cold, but stays open when it's warm. I'll have it checked sometine.

It could be a number of things.Have it looked at by the dealer. Sometimes these cars make noises that are just part of its nature and cannot be eliminated. Although Porsches are excellent works of machinery, they are not always perfect. I believe somewhere towards the back of the owners manual states this in so many words...
Palting: The "rattle" you hear when the engine is cold sounds alot like normal operation. When your engine is cold, your oil is thicker, and your hydraulic lifters (all 24 of them) cannot adjust and compensate quick enough. You are probably hearing the lifters operation. Once the oil gets warm, youll notice the noise goes away.
If the ticking doesnt stop once the engine is warm, then Id be concerned.

Jester,
My 2000 986 made a noise similar to what you are describing. I took it to the dealer. The service tech heard it during a test drive and told me it was a normal sound coming from the intake manifold. If I remember correctly, he said it was a resonance chamber or valve.
Maybe a bad Fetzer valve. Some gauze pads, ball bearings, and 30 weight oil should fix it right up.

I seriously doubt that it's the hydraulic lifters, Pyro. If it's hydraulic lifters, it should be continuous until it's warm. This is intermittent, short microsecond burts at around 2K rpm, too fast, too metalic, to be the lifters.

"Mechanic #1: Whattya think? It's the by-pass line, right?
Fletch: I think it's the by-pass line, yeah.
Mechanic #2: Told ya...
Fletch: I'm gonna need some pliars, and a set of thirty weight ball bearings...
Mechanic #2: What?
Fletch: Yeah.. and... I'll tellya what. I gotta go to my truck. If Fred gets here before I'm back you can tell him to start without me.
Mechanic #1: What the hell you need ball bearings for?
Fletch: Oh, come on guys! It's so simple maybe you need a refresher course. It's all ball bearing nowadays. Now you prepare that Fetzer valve with some 3-in-1 oil and some gauze pads. And I'm gonna need about 10 quarts of anti-freeze. Preferably Prestone. No... no...make that Quaker State. And wash those windows... they've got filth and muck on them."

You guys are hilarious. And here I was about to Google what the heck a Fetzer valve is.
The sounds is happening less often now, and actually it doesn't seem to correlate to cold or warm engine state. It happens so fast that only if I listen carfully or hold right at 3050 exactly do I hear it.
Thanks!

Hi, just found this board & my first post.
'05 S - I have a rattle from the engine compartment at exactly 2100 RPM, but only for a couple of minutes as the temp guage passes 150 degrees. Doesn't happen at any other engine speed, or when warmed up. It does sound like a heat shield vibrating. Since I would have to leave it at the dealer overnight for them to diagnose, I'm not too worried and putting it off.
Meanwhile, I am observing the diabolical 4200 RPM limit until I reach 2000 miles.
P.S. Carmon Red/Tan/Cocoa 6 speed

Sadly, I am getting the same noise in my 2005 997 C2 - it happens around 3000 RPM - I am going to go to the dealer and test drive their 997's to compare and then get them to look at it - whilst under warranty - best to get it sorted!

Replace oil pump plunger per Porsche Tech Line. 206
Noise at oil pump regulating valve.
The following parts were replaced:
996-107-127-53 Oil Piston Spring
996-107-125-51 Oil Pump Piston
996-107-123-50 Pump Piston Ring
One of the parts had to be sent to a machine shop for modification prior to installation.
This repair fixed my car.
