Swap from 19” alloys to 18”?

Default Swap from 19” alloys to 18”?

I'm considering going from 19” 35 profile tyres to 18” 35, to get lower gearing for my local mountain roads.
Have any of you tried this, if so, was it notable?

It's more important to look good than to feel good.

Based on that I'm out. 35 profile on 18" wheels will look dumb. Just get short gears if that's what you want.

Tall gearing just has to be lived with...I would love lower gearing but not willing to put small tires on it. Besides it will mess with the handling.

I autox my 06 Cayman S and found that the car is quicker to accelerate, easier to turn with 18's than the 19's I had on there. Also saved about 4 lbs per wheel in overall weight.

Yes, that would result in an effectively lower final drive, whether you'd feel it or not is a different matter that only you can answer. I would note the the weight of the wheel/tire combo would likely be a bigger contributer to any performance difference.

move to 18's, only downside is possibly fewer tyre choices as we move into the future

I’m looking at semi slicks, many to choose, probably go for latest Namkang.
The 19” set with their Pilot Sport is a keeper, having possibility chancing when ever I like.

Plenty of people use 18s but with the correct size tires.

You might want to ping the racing & drivers ed forum on this. Common use case for racers is optimizing tire circumference to improve final drive ratio.

^This. Also, I don't think going with ~1" smaller diameter tire is going to make much difference in terms of performance. It may feel slightly more lively in 1st and 2nd, but usually it takes around a 10-15% change in gearing to see measurable improvements assuming the car is woefully under-geared. The shorter tires will certainly make the wheel wells appear much larger and look a bit goofy.
