Gutted 987.1 mufflers with pics/video
Hey all
I picked up my '06S over the winter and had been wanting to change the exhaust but wanted something that didn't outright scream all the time as my garage is right below my bedroom and I leave home before my family wakes up every day and I don't want to be "that guy" on my street as we live in an otherwise quiet area.
So after months of looking and listening the Carnewal exhaust seemed to fit the bill but the price, to me at least, was a bit much for a stock-modified exhaust plus I have to ship to and from Canada which is further cost prohibitive.
So I managed to score a set of OEM mufflers from a guy on kijiji for $100 CAD and took them to my shop and threw them at my apprentice and said have fun. I wasn't able to find any confirmed pictures of a Carnewal exhaust as no one understandably cuts open a paid for exhaust for no reason.
So here's what we/he did in the end. Cut the top off, removed the end of the secondary cats completely, gutted the cats, removed 95% of the internal baffles, welded it back up and installed it on the car.
Pictures included of our work. He's admittedly not a welder so save those comments
For $100 and some free time I'm thrilled.

My local shop did one side following the same approach and hard a hard time getting the cats out breaking several cut-off wheels in the process. The other side they cut from the front of the cat and had a much easier time. Put it all back together and it feels quieter! How did that happen?!? Little raspier and lower pitched on the bottom but quieter overall. Only one drive but not the result I was looking for.
