Default tire sealant exploded in frunk

I wanted to put something in my frunk (2014 981 Boxster) this morning and saw around the area where the tire sealant is stored a big stain. Removed the cover and saw this mess underneath!! WTF.... Haven't taken any attempt yet to clean this, anyone else seen that before? Any ideas how to clean this mess? This is another "Porsche Goodie" only seen on a Porsche

. I have/had so many other cars, never had this issue before.

Wow, that is not good. I’m going to go check mine now.

I guess it’s probably a good idea to replace these every 5 - 7 years.

I never took their Exp date recommendation seriously, until now...... Even though, that should have never happened, even with expired bottle, they should have secured it better. I am sure I am not the first person this happens to, pretty sure is going to be a big pain to clean this mess

I don’t recall seeing that occurring before. And many manufacturers use a similar product.

Expired 2/2018? My understanding is that the expiration date is wrt the products performance. Shouldn’t fail like that. Was the container not secured?

The bottle was in original bag in the designated location. It seems the way they store it is not safe, the bottle dosent have the cap on it. I googled this issue and there was on another foruma guy with his 991 who had the exact same issue. One person proposed to put an ordinary bottle cap over the plastic bag on the bottle to avoid this kind of mess.

In the meantime I tried to clean the area up a little. As expected, it is not easy. The material is kind of bubble gum like and greasy. On the smooth surfaces it can be more or less pealed of but it leaves lots of oily/greasy residuals. On the carpet and in the tight areas though it is almost impossible to get rid of. The good thing is that the plastic part in the picture can be unscrewed and thanks to another quality mess of porsche (loose carpet in the frunk), I could pull this plastic part out. Now I have just to take a needle and some other tools, to get the stuff out of this plastic part. I tried also to clean up around the area where the plastic part was attached to, but it takes more time than I have today, so need to do at a later time. Will report back when I have more news/pictures.

John, we all know it has been HOT this year, but has your car been out in the sun during the day "more than normal"? Where do you live?

Yeah I'm wondering if heat is the culprit. I don't know what you're using to remove the residue but I've had good success with Coleman fuel.

I can't remember where I read this (maybe here), but doesn't the tire goop get replaced by the dealership at certain scheduled maintenance intervals (or maybe it's only if expired)?

Manual for my 07 Cayman says to replace it every 4 years. Don't know if dealers typically do that. I bought a can of Slime sealant just to be safe, but never thought of removing the original can - guess I'll do that.

Try putting ice in a plastic bag and rubbing it on the residue until it hardens, then use a plastic scraper to scrape it off the fibrous part of the frunk liner. If you can get it, this is good stuff that does the same thing, only faster... https://www.tygrisindustrial.com/pro...m-remover-r262. Then use Goo Gone to clean up what is left.

Thank you all. Heat might have been a potential issue but should not have been, I mean they test these cars with everything in and on it in all kind of extreme weather and this sealant should be part of the deal considering the mess it left behind. I live in LA but the car is always in my garage and i drive it maybe 4 or 5 times per month max 200 miles per month. I also found the other thread in a different forum and the guy is saying that it was not really hot as it happened:
https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...-exploded.html

Anyway, I have now to experiment to get the mess out of the carpet.BTW it also has some unpleasant chemical smell I hope to get rid of as well. Other alternative would be to just change the entire frunk carpet since it is anyway completely hanging loose on the back top edge of the frunk (another known issue with some boxsters/caymans https://www.planet-9.com/981-cayman-...nk-lining.html). One thing I definitely wont do, is replacing the sealant. As many here already stated, no one needs this stuff.

Yes, owner's manual says the goop bottle should be replaced every 4 years.

I can see it now...75 years down the road, owners entering their antique Boxsters and Caymans in concours d' elegance will be searching the classifieds on RL for cans of original equipment tire goop to complete their cars.
