Default Boxster sweet spot ?

I bought a 2011 C4S but want something I can toss around a little more. What's the sweet spot for a Boxster these days? price/performance/reliability

Thank you.

I'd look at a 2013-2014 Boxster S with 40k miles or less, but can't give pricing data since I haven't looked in a while. If you want cheaper, 2009-2010 would be my bet, to get the DFI engine and PDK.

Lots of options, worth exploring local cars, drive a few and see what your hankering is. For me, the 987 Boxster S was my "sweet spot" 2 years ago. Wanted convertible, prefer these style lines and steering, knew I'd drop an IMS upgrade into the mix, etc. It's very much a personal preference thing Older cars are a bit more 'analog' with newer cars having added amenities and performance. Align your heart's desire with budget and you're headed in the right direction.

That said, I'm a guy that still misses my '88 944 NA. Great car, that.

I’d suggest, roughly in order of increasing price, an ‘07-‘08 Boxster S, ‘09-‘11 base or S, then 981 base or S.
If you’re okay with the older 986, an ‘03-‘04 Boxster S has lots of performance and even a very good example should be the same or less than an average condition 987.

100% - 987.2 Spyder. Crazy good and IS the sweet spot of the Boxster.

You can’t go wrong with any generation. Buy the newest one that fits your budget.

The 987.2 Boxsters are a ridiculous value in every way, the Spyder being the pinnacle. If you want an auto top it is hard to find better value ever in a car than a 987.2 S.

Ha , so glad i have my 944 for that tactile engaging analogue Porsche drive. Often choose it though i have the two Boxsters

The 981 PDK is great for longer journeys with all mod cons and comfort . Performs well , the missus loves it , but is not so tactile and engaging to drive . The 987s are better in this respect and good value for money . The Spyder is very special but not as an everyday car with the necessary buckets , sports exhaust..

Not to hijack this thread but, I'd like to narrow this down a little. I'm saving my Porsche pennies and by the end of the year, I should have 25-30K saved. I live in Arizona and would like to buy from a private seller, no sales tax. I know things will be a bit different at that time, but I'm obsessed.
I'm seeing a few 09-12 (987) Boxster S's for under $30K with mid-low miles. I'm also seeing a few 2013's base cars for similar money, usually more miles. I have a 2013 Cayenne S, I'm a PCA member. I want the car to be my fun car, I'm looking to do DE days and possibly some autocross. I would be cool with a Cayman but they seem to be few and far between and more money, plus I like the idea of dropping the top. Further, I like the idea of more power, but the few people I know who have the base car say it has plenty of power. PDK or manual either would be great with me.
So, any comments or suggestions would be welcome.

After 2 years in the 997, I decided to get back into a mid engine car...specifically the 981. Initially I had my sights on a Cayman, but the S models were slightly out of my price range. With a budget in the mid 30’s, I felt like I would be “settling” with a non S car so I turned my attention to the Boxster. For the same price as a base model Cayman, I was able to pick up a 2014 Boxster S. 30 mins of negotiating got me from $38k down to an even $36k. This for a car that initially listed at $41k.

Deals are out there if you look. I walked into the dealer with no intention of buying, but when they considered my $35k cash offer they did their best to make the numbers work.

Good luck,
