Here's a 987.2 Boxster 2.9L we had in on Friday for a full Competition Package which includes our Competition Headers and Valved Exhaust. It's exactly what the customer was looking for - an invigorating tone when desired, with the ability to calm it down for every day driving.

I've got a set of X-pipe and straight cut black tips ready to go for my Cayman S, but have been too busy to start the work.
I can say however, the quality looks great even if they weight significantly more than I was expecting - are they similar in mass to the OEM tips?

Before shot below, and after shot hopefully to follow as soon as we can get under the car...
In looking for the best way to install, one installer merely loosened their muffler bracket on one side, and slipped off the old set, without any further forward loosening.
Is this recommended, as it seems it would stress flange welding on both the forward flanges and the head?

Any comments or tips appreciated!

Default 987.2 competition package

It’s been 2-1/2 months since John and the shop guys installed my Comp Pkg. Couldn’t be more thrilled with the customer service from beginning to end....and the performance of the system is off the charts great!! Will be back soon for custom ECU remap/tune.

Here is an installation video done at our facility by Matt at SupercarsofPhiladelphia on his 987.1 Cayman to give everyone an idea of the the process.

Part 1 Review from 12/18

As much as I track my car, I enjoy driving my car on the street and also drive my car to and from the track. After about 2.5 years and near 20k miles on and off the track on my old setup, there were several things I did not enjoy that I wanted to target. The drone/resonance in cabin below 3k rpm was rather intense, and sustaining that rpm range (no choice due to speed limit and traffic) would leave anyone in the car with a bit of a headache. Performance with valves closed was significantly reduced, causing a noticeable transition in performance between valves closed and open. Therefore I didn’t want to use the valves closed, but valves open worsened the cabin presence…stuck between a rock and a hard place. The sound level with valves open was straight pipes loud. While glorious at WOT conditions it was a bit obnoxious, and anything other than WOT had little to no “tone” to it. I wanted something less raw/tinny/raspy, more smooth/refined with similar sound level but the edge taken off.

Enter the SOUL Competition Package. 11/18 month I went back to Sebring for my PCA Instructor’s Training. I shipped down the full exhaust system, and the day before I spent 3.5hrs installing the system in AutoQuest’s parking lot on my back with jack stands. No lift space as they had some bigger fish to fry for that weekend (photo below of their shop that day).

I will say the exhaust system install went very smooth with no hiccups, and I was pleasantly surprised it only took me the time it did. Sorry no photos of the system on my car, I was in a rush to move onto the suspension and brake swap that day as well, which I’ll get into later. Once I ship the car back up in March for the northeast track season I’ll get some. I am happy to report that my expectations were exceeded. With the valves closed the drone under 3k rpm was significantly reduced, I finally didn’t have a headache driving to and from Sebring (which was a round trip of over 3hrs). The biggest surprise was that even with the valves open the drone was less than the valves closed on my previous setup. My wife is going to be ecstatic once I get the car back up here haha. The power/performance with valves closed felt just as strong as valves open, so no more performance loss in the valves closed position and no crazy performance transition from closed to open. In fact, even the sound transition closed to open was much smoother. This may be seat of the pants but I do feel like it had a bit more low end grunt than before, though I’m not the only member here that felt this in doing a similar swap (Paul Solk). Sound level at WOT was taken down a notch which to me was a plus as it was pretty obnoxious. The sound itself was more in tune with the premium character of the car. A bit less raw racecar, more so smooth and exotic with a much fuller tone than before, yet still the aggressiveness you’d want as a something advertised as a “Competition” setup. A massive difference from that dead, vacuum cleaner sound that was factory when I bought the car. A true and efficient mild and wild.

While I don't have photos yet, what I did get is video footage and sound clips. I spent three days of bliss beating the snot out of this setup on Sebring, and boy did it leave an amazing impression. So…don’t just take my word for it, take a watch/listen for yourself. If you want to chat about it, give me a call anytime.

Part 2 Review from 2/19

In February I flew down to Sebring, instructed two students (including my brother) and we beat the snot out of my Cayman R for two days. Then, I changed nothing but tire pressure at the track Sunday evening and we drove the car 1100 miles back to PA and to work this morning in perfect comfort. Thank You Porsche for the amazing car, and of course a nice pat on the back for the amazing sound and performance on track, and the lack of drone for the 1100 miles of comfortable highway driving home haha. Also, shout out to AutoQuest MotorSports for the hospitality and Apex Pro for the wicked cool new data acquisition system!
Best regards,
John Gaydos

Default Soul X-Pipe on a 987.2 Cayman S?

At first I thought you had embedded the wrong video...
Putting aside the flippant entitlement, this was indeed almost helpful. Thanks!

To answer the question above, the Soul 987.2 X-pipe weighs 2.8kg, and the OEM T-pipe weighs 2.4kg.
Adding 400g doesn't really count for me at least, but certainly not a weight saving measure.
I wonder how the overall system change compares against the OEM weight?

However, on a Cayman S, just the X-pipe does sound damn nice.
Deeper rumble at idle, and not really louder over the full rev range, but certainly a smoother, deeper note.

The OEM raspy crackle at redline has been reduced, and a deeper smoother tone added.
I also get a few nice pops on high rpm downshifts I did not have before.

Recommend mod for sure, plus it looks damn sexy:

Installation is pretty straight forward, and while a lift would make it easy, you can do with just one jack, axle stand, and removing one wheel.
Make sure you give most nuts a good soaking with rust penetration oil, or similar, before swinging on them.
The 15mm on the OEM T-pipe needs a deep socket, and the 13mm on the headers needs at least a uni-joint, or thin drive.

The balance pipe easily slid aside, and walking the T-pipe up and down, while you wiggle one muffler out seemed to work well for me.
I put the Soul labels on the bottom to avoid looking like a brand snob.

Thanks too for the super speedy shipping and overall good communications.
Not the cheapest option for sure, but the new sound, quality of work, materials, and service make it an easy recommendation...

Thank you for the kind words and thorough review!

The cast X is indeed a little heavier than a piece welded together from thinner stainless steel, but we've seen X-pipes that are welded together fail so we're trading quality and longevity for some extra grams.

Logos are optional and customization is available. On black tips it can add a few weeks while the custom tips get sent out for PVD or Jet-Hot ceramic coating.

Cheers!

Last year we outfitted PCA racer Paul Solks 987.2 Boxster with our Competition Headers and a custom straight through Race Exhaust shedding over 34lbs from his previous aftermarket exhaust setup. With this setup he just put in the fastest PCA Stock I class lap ever around Watkins Glen!

Here's the record setting lap:
