The conclusion I’ve drawn is that the Spyder (both model years) is the most underrated Porsche to be produced. I have to think that as long as Porsche sticks with a similar formula the new Spyder will be another incredible drivers car with tons of character.

My guess is that it's a step function higher performing/sharper tool and another step away from the simple driving car. The 981 was that to the 987 and I expect that the 982 will be the same to the 981. A lot of it will come down to personal preference.

I agree with this statement. For me it’s the opposite direction I prefer... The 987.2 was about Ultra lightweight, simple and raw. The 982 will be more about performance... which is fine, just not what the original was about.

High praise, indeed. Always love hearing comparisons of the 981 Spyder to other Porsche offerings by those that have sampled plenty. I've always felt the car is extremely special but admittedly don't have a wealth of prior Porsche ownership to draw upon (or back it up).

I'm discovering it in reverse. Now that I have the 981 Spyder, I get excited about a lot of cars but when I finally get to drive them......thanks but no thanks. It's kind of ruined me.

Interesting, I've had the same experience. All it takes is a drive in my Spyder whenever I have notions of a different car and I'm cured...

Nice. I love my (1st P) car even more after reading that post.

This is probably the best description of the Spyder; the one that truly captures the essence of the whole package!

I wouldn't bet on it! Porsche's Black Magic of ultimate steering feel is behind us, sadly! One could argue, correctly, that among the present trend of electrical/electro-mechanical setups, 981 Spyder/GT4/GT3s are probably the best. However, we may never get the magic of hydraulic setup, ever! Odd thing is, the electrical system is allegedly highly tunable. Yet, Porsche just couldn't bring back the pinnacle of steering feel. Each iteration seems to be getting better. At some point, it may come close to glory days of the past. But, by then, such a setup could be in a hybrid or electric!! And, I would rather have the calibration from GT3 (tuned specifically for the Spyder) than Turbo. Yes, oddly, 981's came from Turbo while GT4 got from GT3. 982 gen will fix that anomaly.

The current edition of Panorama Street Talk section page 22 say the 718 Spyder version will be the 4.0 GT3 engine. Not sure of their track record but it seems they are usually accurate on upcoming Porsche models.

Funny to see the continued prejudice against the Boxster name from someone who owns one and admits it's a great Porsche. "My name is John and I drive a Porsche 981 GTS ordered to my specs." vs "My name is John and I drive a Boxster." If it were a 911 the engine would be in the wrong place.

No prejudice intended. Just an empirical description for those who haven't driven the car. The Boxster is a great platform (and size) but has often needed more power. I love the car.

Which all above is in part while I keep sniffing around pre-electric steering GT3's. My latest toe tip? Into the 996.2 GT3. What a cool car. So much feel and with the wailing Mezger and the lack of insulation it's rawer than the Gen 1 Spyder. I'll keep you guys posted...

P.s. This Spyder has to stay...

You got it right. My 996.2 GT3 only looks and feels better as years go by. I predict that in 10 years the 996 gt3 will rise towards the top of the GT3 totem pole, similar to the longhoods in the 911 universe. It's the rarest, the most raw, and the purest of all GT3's. Plus it's the closest to the Cup car which it homologated -- basically a street-legal Cup car with interior. There's a nice Speed Yellow one on BaT right now. I'm looking to add a Boxster myself.
