Default 981 Boxster S 6-sp roadtest in new Car and Driver

Very good article and good results. It looks fantastic in Silver with a Gray interior and black wheels. In the article, the overall tone is much more positive than the reviews of the 991. First, they liked the steering and commented that it felt right. Acceleration matched the same 12.9 1/4 mile time of the 6-sp 987 Boxster Spider and PDK 987 S they tested. Top speed was 176 mph, right up there with the new Carrera Cab. Test weight for a highly loaded car without PCCBs was 3070, so it really is lighter than the 987. Jury is still out on the 991 as some of the Coupe test cars weighed over 3400 lbs. The skidpad and brake distance numbers are the best they've measured off a Boxster/Cayman, better than a Boxster Spyder or Cayman R. Article should be online in a week or 2 after all the printed copies are distributed. Check it out for a good read.

Thanks for sharing. My plan is to order a 981S early in 2013. The only option I vacillate on is PSM. Like the sound, but don't like the added weight and price.

Read the article last night. Well written! I would scan it and load it on here, but I think I might violate a copyright law...Thoughts?

I would think you would need their permission, but I'm not a lawyer. No problem with your summary of key observations however.

Better yet...I just got back from skip barber where I drove the new 981 S on several occasions. I was very pleased with the car and to top it off, I got to drive by myself on the track following an instructor in a turbo. Simply fantastic! Then the instructor took me on a hot lap where it was literally "***** to the wall"....

I am very glad I ditched my 01 S for this car. Although pricey as hell, this car is one for the record books. I will load up some photos tomorrow in a new thread.

Folks, if you ever have the opportunity to go to Porsche Driving Event at Skip Barber Motorsports outside of Birmingham Alabama, DO IT!

I was reading a post on the 991 forum, and a poster there was dissing the 981 as a toy. In the hands of a competent driver, the 981S will hold its own against base 911s. The 991 is a fine sports car, but so is the 981.

Porsche's choice to downgrade the base 991 engine to the Boxster/Coxster 3.4l engine makes spending the extra dollars for a base Carrera Cab a branding issue and not a performance issue. Since the 981 S now has equal power to weight with the Carrera Cab and the Carrera only has more power at higher rpms, the lighter weight of the 981 S should make it a track winner. BTW, this is the perspective of someone who's only Porches have always been 911s.

I think you meant to say PSE, not PSM. If you can afford it, I would strongly recommended!

Saludos,

PSE would not add any significant weight either

I drove both yesterday. 991 is a little faster in straight line ONLY. Had no problem keeping up in 981.

I think once IPD and Softronic tuning get invloved in the 981 aftermarket segment, this may close the gap. The base engine in 991 and 981 is the same...Only detuned and suppressed.

Same old story about Porsche. They know the 981 is hot, but still has to have some justification for 991 price and pedigree.

Eduardo - You are right; I meant PSE. I test drove both the Base and S models, and it seemed to me the Base had a much sportier sound. Based on your recommendation, PSE gets on my order list.
