Afshin hit the nail on the head. If it was all about 0-60 and speed we'd all be driving a GT-R. Porsche likes to play games with hp numbers and 0-60 times purely for marketing purposes.

I'm pumped about 981, at least on paper. I'm in my late-forties, five years past using a street car regularly on track or racing (in a dedicated car.) Don't particularly enjoy it any more, at least not enough to bother with. Been there, etc. But I do love a nimble sportscar on the street. My 986 SE only has 38k miles, no need to replace it. But dang, that 981 shore is purdy! Made me think I'll just get me one this summer when they hit the street, provided it drives as nice as it looks.

P.S. I loved test driving the Spyder extensively but the top was a deal-killer for me. While I don't daily drive the Boxster, I don't want to ever decide not to take it somewhere because I don't want to hassle with the top. Sure, I'm a soft old poseur, but who cares? I likes what I likes.

I would not read too much into 1/10 second to 60.

Of course off the line acceleration is a very small part of a porsches performance, but it is one concrete measurement that Porsche uses to asses the relative speed of it's cars. Given porsches track record, it is doubtful the 981 wil be a less thrilling car than the 987. Of course the spyder is a different story. I will be driving the 991S this weekend and I hope to drive the 981 this spring.

yeah I don't trust those time sheets on any basis Porsche have made a habit of tinkering with those by putting in tall first gears and adding other deliberate restrictions. But it's simply illogical to think that a new Porsche will not be faster than the last or have lesser handling, shorter braking, etc. Which also means that the faster the car will go, the more powerful it becomes, the more driver assists are needed and less connected the car will feel. More responsive with less feel.
It's strange that way, the easier you make it to go faster the more you are diluting the raw feel that the sports car buyer is really after. But that's secondary to unit sales.
Porsche doesn't want those unit sales up a tree on their first outing.

Just ventured over to the Porsche website yesterday and saw the stunning silver w/red interior 981 mounted on 20s.... WOW! Personally, I love the look. With that said, I am a purist Porsche guy and like the feel of pre-1980s 911s, as well as the "old school" feel of my 996 GT3. I bought a 997.1 Cab S as a DD a year ago and - to be blunt - it is kind of soft. Once that comes off CPO next winter, I'll get something new... I am thinking a 997.1 GT3, a 987 Spyder or perhaps a 981 S with those gorgeous 20 inch wheels and "perfectlap's" color scheme (550 throw-back) of silver with red.... My fear is that the 981 will be a bit soft... (I am leaning 987 Spyder to be perfectly honest, but the thought of 2 GT3s in the garage is enticing)...

My 0.02,
-B

That car really caught the eye... no wonder Porsche selected it for the photo shoot, very nice combo! Is that the Platinum or GT Silver?

(Choice of car also with the intention to pitch the rather pricey natural leather interior, I suppose )

Nice pics here. make mine GT Silver w/Carrera Red interior....love the new interior. Wonder if they'll put out a special edition to end the life of the current model...? Like a RS60ish car.

Wow. Thanks for this. The Brits really love their leather and wood. Very very sharp. Just spent an hour looking at the web special and the funny little videos - way to short I might add! I love the comparison to the old spyders. With the top down the roof line arcs right up into the roll bars. This is a beautiful car and (I can't believe I am saying this...) more striking than the 991? With the car configurator it didn't take me long to surpass the 100k mark. But then again the 991 would be over 150k...

Notice they have dropped the wood options from the configurator...Wonder why they did this?

I was behind one of these yesterday and thought to myself, humm... something looks familiar about this car's rear end...

... and then it hit me...

Design inspiration? :-P

There's a lot of things missing from the US configurator, not just wood.

All of these options are still in the German configurator, but with a note that they are not available until week 23.
