"Upgraded" Steering Feel?
#32
Just tried this on my CS. I didn’t have to be in developer mode to do the change!! It’s nice to have the lighter feel in the city. Haven’t had a chance to drive on the twisty roads yet.

I guess it can be intimidating.
if you have PASM it too can be changed. I’m hesitant to change PASM settings as the other options are for the 911’s. I’m thinking the 911 settings will be calibrated for a rear rear vehicle configuration as opposed to the mid rear of the 981s. Not sure how much it will change the drivability of the car

Steering pulse generator
Since I too found the 981 steering feel unacceptable compared to my previous Porsches I looked into how they got the 718 steering to improve.
the power steering system part number is updated by two digits in the 718. I bet that hardware, around $500-700 from a wrecked 718 and the GT3 calibration gets you into 987 god mode steering feel.

Was able to code the 'GT3' power steering calibration file without a hitch:
Originally I thought I would have to push the car on some twisty roads to appreciate any differences but the changes to the EPS calibration were immediately apparent. I strung together a few errands I "needed" to get done tonight and drove around for 45 minutes or so. It's tough to describe something as subjective as steering feel but I'll try my best. Here are my very early impressions of the updated EPS calibration:

Here are my very early impressions of the updated EPS calibration:
- The very first thing I noticed was that the steering is now much lighter immediately off-center than before when traveling at speed. I would say about 30-40% lighter than with the original calibration. The steering no longer feels artificially heavy to me. The reduced steering effort immediate off-center definitely gives the impression of a sharper turn in and makes the car feel smaller/more agile.
- The steering now loads up much more progressively than previously. I would say this "ramping up" effect is at least double what it was with the original calibration. You get a much better sense of the front tires digging in and gripping than before. Even after a pretty short drive on public roads I felt a lot more confidence what the car was doing mid-corner and how my throttle/steering inputs were affecting the balance of the car. This was my favorite change with the new calibration.
- I didn't feel much change in terms of road texture being transmitted to the steering wheel. I believe this was an actual hardware change in the 2nd-generation EPAS systems introduced with the 991.2 and 718 generations. I remember the technical specs mentioning the addition of a "steering pulse generator" to give the impression of more road feel. I didn't miss the extra texture though. I think the way the steering weights up provides more useful information.

Successfully loaded the GT3 calibration on my car using PIWIS 3. Happy that it worked without any issue unlike trying to activate Sport+ which I haven't been able to successfully do, even with an activation code.
Haven't gone on any “spirited” drives yet, but definitely noticed the lighter/“springy” feel as noted by others. Looking forward to trying on some canyon roads this weekend.
For anyone that doesn't already access to PIWIS, a knockoff PIWIS 3 setup is much lower price of admission than PIWIS 2.

If you have a relationship with your indy you can just ask. Not necessarily the same thing, but I had Bodymotion in Ocean turn off my rising spoiler with the PIWIS and was thinking of asking them about this "upgrade".
