Default Backup camera wire path?

For anyone that has installed a backup camera on the 981, how did you get the cable from the camera into the car? Which path can I take?

I am only looking to find a way to run the cable from the license plate bracket into the trunk.

thanks,

I didn't buy their camera, but found the instructions from Maxspeed-Motorsports helpful. Basically, remove the right taillight, raise the spoiler, and then you should be able to look through the gap under the spoiler and fish the cable first through there and then over towards the right behind the taillight and then into the car.

I couldn't really visualize it reading the instructions I linked to at first, but it gave me a place to start. Once I had the taillight out and spoiler up, it all made sense. Just have to look to see where the openings are. Unfortunately I didn't snap any photos.

It took me a bit to get the cable fished through, mostly because I managed to drop a grabber tool I was using behind the bumper cover and spent a while trying to get it out without having to pull everything apart. Don't do that and you should be fine

The Maxspeed instructions and accompanying youtube videos will get you to the point where you should be able to figure it out easily enough. The only tip that I can give is to duct tape the wires to a coat hanger to push them as far as possible through the hole in the bumper, and then another one to fish everything into the taillight area. This is really the only challenging part, from there you can easily go through the grommet hole and into the trunk. Also if you can get somebody to help out for a few minutes it was definitely beneficial having two people trying to do the fishing.

thank you.

So I am guessing the removal of the rear bumper wasn't needed.?

No, it was not. I managed to get the tool I dropped behind out after a lot of blind rummaging around. 75north's suggesting of taping the cables and using coat hangers should prevent the same mistake I made.

Just looked over the instructions. Well if one has the license plate 'light' version of a camera, you can use the opening, however for the center mounted camera you have to remove the bumper and drill holes.

I have a camera that is mounted to the license plate screw holes. It's a different setup - the camera connects to a wireless transmitter.. the camera has a small wire, guess I will try to remove the license plate light and see if I can use that opening and then reinstall the license plate light. I just need to connect it to the reverse light cables.

I have a similar wireless unit which comes with a license plate frame, with the camera installed. There was a convenient hole above the license plate so I ran the + and ground wires upward through that hole, then over to the driver's side fog lamp wiring. So when I want the camera on I turn on the fog lamps and launch the app on my phone, and off I go.

Oops, sorry for confusion. This wiring is on my 996. My wife's 981 came with the back up alert system. Reading too many boards early in the AM.

I purchased the Maxspeed b/u camera with the license plate lite camera and followed their instructions and did not remove the bumper cover. Maxspeed also had the option for a center mounted camera that requires drilling a hole. You might review their instructions to see if it requires removing the bumper cover.

oops…I just noticed your reply that you may have already looked at Maxspeed center camera installation.

Well, what I wanted to do isn't going to work on a cayman. I bought a camera that tabs in into the reverse light wires, but it needs to be the standard 12 volt on the reverse lights. But since the cayman uses LED's it's not 12 volts that's supplied to the lights. I am assuming 5volts on the LEDs.

Anyone have any ideas how to get around this.

I have my original OEM led license plate light that I replaced with the Maxspeed camera and it is marked 12V/1W so I am assuming that the led back up lights are also 12V??? You might check the circuit with a multi meter or see if the part is marked 12V.

You are right, I think even though they are LED they are 12 volts.

I fished the wire to the grommet just below the rear lid hatch. Removed carpet to see it. Then routed the wire along right side. Tapped in blue/blk wire from that same grommet area for +power. It turned on my 12v test light when put into reverse

thanks everyone for your input. I was able to figure out the path to take and ran the wire from the back up camera to the 12volt line. However, the camera kit I bought comes with a rear view mirror that has a screen to comes on when in reverse. Unfortunately, Porsche uses a mounting piece that isn't exactly standard and the new mirror won't install. For not I just placed the screen in the glove box. I don't use a backup camera very often, only when parking very close to other cars in small spaces. Having it in the glove box will do the trick for now. Wireless camera and mirror only cost $120 so def much cheaper than other options.

This has been on my to-do list for a bit and would have come in handy this weekend at a PCA outing. I installed the JoyeAuto Carplay unit and need to get off my lazy **** and pull the trim to run the camera.
