Weird oil temp.
2013 boxster base. PDK Always use Sport Mode. Gas shortage here in SC so while traveling on highway I used the default non-sport mode. Briefly got cel “oil too full”...i had already checked and oil level fine. After driving 30 minutes or so noticed oil temp had climber to 225 ( usually 198 to 205) Coolant temp remained normal at 194! Switched to Sport mode and oil temp decreased to 203. Anyone had a similar experience or have an explanation for increased oil temp? Thanks
My '12 CS does the same thing. These cars are designed to run cooler in Sport mode; I believe there is a second fan that kicks in when Sport or Sport + are used. Normal driving mode was designed to keep emissions low and better mpg's. Porsche has to report emissions for their entire product line, as well as test a sample of their older cars. My '12 CS' emissions were tested three years ago, and Porsche provided a new Panamera GTS to drive as a loaner. The emissions target may have been the primary reason for launching the 718 4-cyl cars. Just my opinion though.
Normal. As stated Sport and Sport+ mode fully open electronic thermostat allowing more flow to the oil heat exchanger. The heat exchanger warms the engine oil with coolant when first started then cools when it reaches operating temp. Sport/Sport+ also increases the idle which increases battery charge rate.

Somewhere here on the Forum someone said Sport Mode does more than just open the flow to the Oil Cooler. Said there's a full ECU map that gets engaged.
I use Sport mode whenever I notice the oil temp gets above 220. Works like a charm.

Side note but I'm not sure it's a good idea to always drive in sport. Unless you're driving the car very hard, the additional cooling in sport mode won't let it climb above 212F for long enough to evaporate any water in the oil. When I told my mechanic I always drive in sport mode he mentioned this and advised putting it in normal every so often to ensure no oil dilution. I also make a lot of short trips though because it's my only car so it probably matters more for me than most.
