Default Keep the 981 or git a new 781 ?

Hey all,
Long time lurker, great site
Don't want to start a flaming war :>}
But....
Current Porsche is a 2015 981 base Cayman. 30k miles great condition
Way to much fun, Autocross/DE track
Had a 99 C4 966, that was a great car until with 110 k the front dif gave way
enter the 2015 981 Base
miss the Carrera but Love the 981.
(Wish I had room for the 2)
Quandary, Do I trade in the 981 for a new 4 cylinder turbo base
or a 2010 or there about Carrera ?
or just shut up and be happy with the bird in the hand ……
I know
I know
Just shut up and drive !
Happy Turkey Day to all

I don’t know, I’ve been tracking my base 2014 for five years now. Steering is excellent. So is the sound. (FVD Brombacher exhaust).

The 981 is one of the best looking cars ever made. 718 is a step down IMO.

If you really want more power get a lightly used 981S.

718 is better in every way except for the sound but IMO the sound is ok.

718 S with Cup 2 tires offers better performance than 981 GT4 but does not sound as good and arguably the GT4 looks a little better.

IMO the 718 looks marginally better than 981 but both are very nice looking cars.

I think it comes down to whether or not you are anti-4 cylinder.

2016 981s are great buying at the moment and I agree I would get the 981 S if you can't afford the 718, although the base 718 will have marginally better performance.

The 2010 Carreras look very nice but they just do not handle or perform as well as the 718 or 981 S.

I'd go with a 981 S or GTS or a GT4.

I have a 2014 MT 981 CS (which I AX regularly) and have driven the 718 twice as a loaner. Nice car. Looks good (better than the 981 CS? Wouldn't say that necessarily, but it looks great) and performs well. I do, however, think that the 981 CS felt more responsive in both throttle and handling. Others say that the torque gain in the base 718 is very noticeable, but it didn't feel that way to me (it probably depends on driving style) and I did notice the very slight turbo lag. (Note that my car has PASM which the loaners did not and that I always drive it in Sport mode. Has RE-71Rs on it, too, and the loaners probably had P-zeros.) Let me put it this way: After driving the 718, I would never give up my 981 CS for a 718, but I haven't driven a 718 CS, either. If your choice is between a 981 CS and a 718, I'd say go with the 981 CS. If you're thinking about stepping up to a 718 CS, I suspect that car would be even better.

Regards,

Greg

all of your points are dead on
The 718 is a great car,
but so is my 981
and that is what is making my decision of holding
or folding ….
tough
Does it come down too
6 vs 4
I hope not

IMO it is all about 6 vs 4. Interior and exterior differences are so minor, the real deciding factor is engine. The 4 is faster, the 6 sounds better, take your pick.

^yep. The 718 drives great and is significantly faster (and has torque, which is something no cayman has in significant quantities at low revs). But the tradeoff is sound. Otherwise the 718 rocks. I had a 2 day loaner 718 and enjoyed it, but was also glad to get back in my 981S. Can't go wrong with either, but since you already have a 981 I'd sit tight.

Just go test drive a 718. I think the 718 on track is great. On the street I noticed the lag. Sport mode eliminates most of the lag but the high idle speed makes it feel buzzy in traffic. Drive one and see what you think.

Love both cars.
One bonus with the 718 is the ability to flash the ecu and get more power. Not really an option in the 981.
718 interior is a bit larger and body a bit more aggressive with sharper lines.

I am keeping my 981. Love the flat 6.....

Huh!!! I had a 981 CGTS and currently have a 718 CGTS and no disappointment with either. The 718 is definently faster on track, 2.3 sec at NCM, once you learn to roll into the throttle sooner an slower corners in 3rd gear, I have a MT and unless the apex speed is under 50mph I don’t downshift into 2nd. Sound is not a reason I wouldn’t buy a 718 but that is me. I would also be happy still owning the 981 CGTS but a GT350 got in the way for a couple of years.
