Default Flat 6 Motorsports - Project 981 Cayman Build Thread

Hey all, we've been a sponsor here on Rennlist for some time. We recently picked up a 981 base 2.7L Cayman, manual w/ 5K miles. We'll be doing a build series on our YouTube channel, so feel free to follow along. We're also planning on posting some of our progress here as well as our Blog. We'll feature install guides, dyno tests, and impressions along the way!

Here's a list of what we plan to do:
  • Oil Change w/ Motul 0W40
  • LED Clear Side Markers
  • Raceseng Circuit Series Sphere Shift ****
  • Cobb Accessport
  • GT3 82MM Throttle Body
  • IPD Competition Plenum
  • aFe Air Filters
  • Agency Power 200 Cell Headers
  • Soul Performance Products Valved Cat-Back
  • Ohlins or JRZ Coilovers
  • Tarett Engineering Sway Bars
  • 991 Carrera S Brakes
  • Wheels/Tires

Please do some dyno pulls stock vs headers/stock catback if possible. I've heard this is the best value for gains on the 2.7L, but there's a rather small sample size since most people add an exhaust in addition to headers, and even fewer do multiple dyno pulls.

Thank you for putting this program together. While my 981 is a CS, I hope to learn a lot about the various modifications you have planned.

We'll do our best. We don't have a dyno in-house so will try to get as much dyno data as we can in between the baseline and completion. I can't promise we can dyno each part, but should have some good understanding of the various mods. We will also have some acceleration testing that will be helpful as a reference as well.

Thanks and our pleasure. A lot of the parts are identical between the trims. Obviously the 3.4L will respond differently than the 2.7L but it should be fairly similar to gains when it comes to power adders.

Definitely subscribed. Have Cobb and considering IPD competition plenum & high flow cats but was cautious based on some conflicting feedback on plenum (most seem to agree at least cats help). I understand that you don't have a dyno but (after upgrading the cats) will you go straight to a custom tune or start with the OTS Stage 2 from Cobb? As others have said, thanks for doing this!

Awesome! We just got the baseline numbers yesterday and will post episode 3 tomorrow. The tuning is easy to change on the dyno so we will probably do all hardware w/ no tune, with the Cobb OTS Stage 2 map, and our custom Pro Tuning map. We'll get a run with the Stage 1 OTS map as well without any other mods. We'll do our best to get as much data as possible.

Episode 3 is up with some baseline numbers. Check out more info here: https://flat6motorsports.com/blogs/n...runs-episode-3

The 2.7L put down a peak HP number of 229.6 HP @ the wheels on a DynoJet dyno at 95 degrees fahrenheit.

Power Adding Mods will include:
Cobb Accessport Stage 1 OTS Map
aFe High Flow Air Filters
IPD Competition Plenum w/ GT3 (82MM) Throttle Body
Agency Power 200 Cell Headers
Soul Performance Products Valved Exhaust System

Saw the third episode, keep em coming, very interesting stuff!! I was surprised as well at the premature power drop off. Since you were soliciting feedback with regards to the upgrade, I think it would be great to see:
Cobb Accessport Stage 1 OTS Map (surprised you guys didn't do that on this first dyno run after the baseline since it is so quick??)Dyno pull
aFe High Flow Air Filters
IPD Competition Plenum w/ GT3 (82MM) Throttle Body
Agency Power 200 Cell Headers
Soul Performance Products Valved Exhaust System
Dyno pull
Stage 2 OTS
Dyno pull
Custom pro tune
Dyno pull
That's just one person's opinion, but I think that would get the most bang for the buck from the least dynos. Thanks again for this, great info!

Thanks for the feedback and very aligned with what we were thinking. We may have *cough* *cough* already got those Stage 1 OTS numbers

I personally was interested in doing the intake side first just to hear the difference before we did the exhaust side. Once all that hardware was done, we planned to do a dyno with no tune, Cobb Stage 2 tune, and then dial in our custom map all at the same time. That means only one more trip to the dyno.

I just wanted to leave it open for feedback! Thanks, we're really looking forward to installing these parts.

I am with the general ideas Dom991.1 has suggested. It would of course be great to make one mod, do a pull etc, but understand this could be cost prohibitive. Basically what does an "improved plumbing" combination of intake and exhaust mods do for real world power AND drivability. Then add a tune that takes advantage of these mods. Your 0-60 times may be more informative than the dyno IMHO.

My personal experience with these types of mods is with American V8's in 4x4's and I didn't dyno test them due to cost, but the power gains were clear to anyone who drove these vehicles.

Thank you again for investing your time and money in this project. I am sure it will pay off.

Thanks! We'll be able to get just hardware only and with tuning power pulls. If we have time, we might try and see what just the intake side gives us. We have a QStarz LT-6000S coming in hopefully this week to help dial in the accuracy on acceleration runs. We'll get some 0-60 but due to the variance in launches, we might do a 30-80mph figure to better compare. They have charting software, so we'll be able to break down the % decrease in acceleration times. It will be neat as the build goes on because we can also measure Gs and deceleration when we get to suspension and brakes. Our goal is providing data, data, and more data!

Default Thanks for taking the time and $ to do this

My car is a 987.2 Cayman Base, but I would think what you are doing would translate to it pretty handily.
