968 cylinder head refresh

I finally got the head off today. Do the cam followers need to be retained in their specific bores? Also, how should they be cared for while the head is out for machining / refreshing work? Should the lifters be in a bucket of oil?
Thanks

the lifters/cam followers do NOT need to stay in their original bores, machining-wise, but they should remain where they were to match up with a "mated wear surface" on the camshafts.
