Newbie from New Mexico Porsche 968
Hello all,
Just joined the forum to learn more about the 1994 Porsche 968. I have an oppertunity to purchase one in my home town. It is a 1994, 6 speed standard, 49k miles. Water pump and timing belt have been replaced. The car is in full working order. I might trade my 1970 Camaro SS for it. Just wondering what feedback you might have on that car. I see that these engines can go alot of miles. Thanks,
quarkdude

Welcome and congrats! You ended up with a great and unique Porsche. This is the best forum out here with a great group. If you want to learn more about your car post the last 3 digits of the VIN. Coupe or cab? You can consider joining the Porsche club. Here is the link for the 968 register to learn more:

Hello Jeff968,
I talked with the owner of the 968 and he gave me the last 3 numbers of the
VIN, it is 308.
I haven't got the car yet, tomorrow I'm going to drive my 1970 Camaro SS over to the owner and then check out the 968 in person. He did send me a couple of pictures of the car and it looks amazing. Pretty sure the deal is going to work out. I'll post some pics of it soon.
Thanks for the welcome to the site, from looking around this is definitely the place for 968 info.
Thanks, quarkdude

Quarkdude welcome. I am also a newcomer. I became an owner at the end of last year. I highly recommend ownership and driving a 968. Mine is another 94.
When you go check out your prospective car do ask/check when the Timing Belt and Water rpump were replaced. I believe time/age (every 4 years I have it as) is important as far as the belt is concerned.
You should also check out the engine or motor mounts. They seem to have very finite lives on these cars. If you are wrench then none of this really matter, but if you are not a do it yourselfer you should have a budget to get these three things done if need be.
I have no muscle car experience, least not of 1970 Camaro SS, but I am nevertheless pretty sure that you are going to be impressed with the 968's responsiveness and handling. It is great drive and I feel good every time I am in its driver seat.
Good luck.

Thanks for the info from the vin decode. I can't wait to see the car in person tomorrow.
Karrera Coupe
Thanks for the info on things to look for on the car. I'll ask when the water pump and timing belt was replaced exactly. I do wrench on cars, since I was very young and still do today. Most maintenance I can take care of if it is needed. The 1970 Camaro is 300hp to 3200lbs vs. the 240hp to 3000lbs Porsche 968 about the same HP/weight ratio - pretty good actually. I'll take a look at the motor mounts ( gotta remember to take my LED flashlight ), and make sure they look good. I sure like a good handling car and this one I read is just that.

Welcome! Might not be a bad idea to get a PPI done at a local Porsche service shop as well. Not sure where you are in NM but others on the board may be able to recommend a place to visit.

The owner of the car said it has been serviced at Hans Wittlers Automotive here in Albuquerque, NM where I am at. I will give them a call tomorrow and ask about the history of the car. Good idea to ask someone who has worked on it. I should be able to see when the water pump and timing belt was replaced - probably done at Han's.

Well, drove the Camaro over to the 968 owner and he doesnt seem to be interested anymore. The camaro is in awesome shape. Ohh, well. I did look at the 968 and wow, its in good shape.
Turns out he last 3 of the VIN is actually 380 not 308.
He said he would "think about it for a couple of days". Usually that means no deal
I have my car for sale on various sites so if I get a cash buyer, Ill keep looking for another 968.
