Default Transaxle book

Anyone notice anything unusual about the 968 on page 33?

17 inch cup 1's? Always thought it was a great looking wheel, just too small.
Wish I could get my hands on a set of those.

17" cup1s aren't anything new. My cab came with them from the factory. But I agree, the set on that prototype do look a little different with a narrower spoke, similar to the 16" cup1s.

The 17 inch wheel is actually the 964 turbo wheel on your cab not the 16 inch cup 1. This looks to be a 17 inch cup 1. Which I've never seen before.

There are a number of labels for the wheels but here in the 968 world we typically refer to them as 17" Cup 1s. The 17" Cup 2s came out with the 1994 model year. We call the standard wheels 16" cup 1s. And I agree with you on those wheels in the photo.

Speaking of labels, and because of their thin spokes and appearance, I have heard the 16s referred to as "Starfish". When someone says "Cup I" or "Cup II", I automatically think of 17s.

As to the wheels in the book, I'm sure that Porsche and other manufacturers have many things that they have either tried, chosen not to mass produce or in some cases not even shown the public. Ferry's "dune buggy" and the prototype 968 Cab are 2 that come to mind immediately.

The 17" cup 1's in the 968 Cabriolet photo( above ) were a Genuine Porsche option for the 968 in 1992 & 1993 ,or to put another way , the standard wheels on a standard 968 were the standard 16" dia 5 spoke 968 wheels , the expensive option in 1992 & 1993 was the 17" cup 1 wheels as per photo

From 1994 Porsche offered the option for the"cup 2" style wheels

No that's incorrect. The whole entire reason I posted that photo is because I have never seen a 17 inch version of the 16 inch cup 1, it was never mass produced. The expensive 17 inch option with the rounder spokes you are referring to was not officially called the cup 1 it was known as the "C2 turbo" wheel or 964 turbo can't remember which. But yes, the 17 inch wheel as stated earlier has for all intensive purposes become the cup 1 as well.

EdIt, I just noticed you were referring to the cabriolet photo. In that case you are correct. Mistook that as you referring to the wheel in the book, sorry.
