Just picked up a 93 968 No oil pressure
I've always had 944s and 951s bt I came across this 93 968 with sport seats for an unrest stable price. The PO went to pull out of his driveway when all of a sudden the top end got real loud. I got it home and took a look and it's not getting oil pressure, before I dig to far into it I'd love some advice or common problems with oil pressure if there is any? Not sure the best place to start as I'm familiar with the 2.5.

Congrats!
If you don't have the repair manual.....
You might want to click this link. There is a lot of information on the engine in the factory manual. Two other documents also in the directory.
Right click and select "save target as" due to the size of the document.
Good luck!

Three Wheelin'
First thing I would do is check the timing/balance shaft belts - and make sure the bolt for the main pulley on the crank is tight. If the balance shaft belt is aligned incorrectly, it can cause vibrations that will crack the oil pickup tube, which will lead to air in the system and low or no oil pressure.
You should definitely pull the valve cover off and make sure the variocam pads are in good shape, and that the J tube of the Variocam unit is also not cracked.
Looks like a great car, and congrats on joining the 968 community!

Uh, I'm betting that's your pickup tube that cracked and not allowing oil to the top of the engine. Its a weak spot on these cars, thin metal and vibration dont mix. Stephen is right on the balance shaft, but if this car has seen persistent high rpms, that can also do it. Pretty big job. How many miles on the car.
3200 may or may not be a good price, depends on what's been done.

Thanks Stephen, I'll check it although I fired it up for a few seconds bc I didn't know anything other than what the PO told me, it seems to. Run real smooth other than the loud clapping at the top end.
I think it has around 110k on the clock

I would buy this car for 3200 with the black leather interior in great shape with sport seats, and everything else on the car the way it is all day long even if the motor was toast all together, I assume the worst when I picked it up, so if I can fix it it's a plus, if not, I'm still very happy with what I paid

Wow, nice buy!
If there's no oil pressure at the top end, it's a good chance the VarioCam isn't "inflating", and the timing chain is rattling against the inside of the cam tower cover.
When my 944S had this problem, it turned out to be a blocked oil galley thanks to the PO.

If you can fix it yourself, it's like a $20 part, and you'd be way ahead of the game. Need to pull the pan, remove cross member, disconnect steering. Do the rod bearings and new pan gasket while you are in there.
