I have a nagging rattle noise most noticeable at idle to 2,500rpm worse when it is cold outside and over bumps coming from what sounds like just under the shifter.
I did a bit of reading and took it by the dealer to check the heat shields. Told all is well and tight, nothing loose, it is coming from inside the front muffler.
Is there anything inside the muffler itself that can come loose? Other ideas??
Thanks!!

There is no front muffler, but there is a catalytic convertor right by the shifter and in the middle is the resonator. It could be that one or the other might have failed internally.

Service writers description. I would assume he was talking about the resonator.
The car has less than 16,000 miles so maybe rusty, loose resonator?
I guess it might be worth dropping it down for inspection and shaking.

Any suggestions on sourcing on OEM exhaust at the best price? Local Porsche dealer is $2,200 and independent is $2,100. Someone got an in at a dealer that would just drop ship it to me?

I have a rattle that sounds somewhat like yours, but it comes and goes, and then I figured out it was the rear metal belly pan, there are two studs that come out where the pan attaches in the wheel well, they are stripped and neither have a nut on them....now one has a plastic nut on it, the other one still has nothing on it.
You might want to check this out if you have this belly pan installed, make sure the nuts are there and that they are tight.

The nut is number 6:

Paul, Thanks! The pan is installed. Both the Porsche dealer and top rated local independent has stated that it is definitely inside the exhaust itself. For the condition and low miles of the car it does just blow me away that it has failed.
968TurboS, Thanks! Good used would be fine as well.

I have an exhaust in super bueno condition.
won't require packaging, but won't be cheap to ship.
i'll also need your old resonator.
but regarding yours. I'm stumped.
I don't think you need a new exhaust. that's pretty drastic.
just whatever's making the noise.

I had the same thing last week. The resonator plate came loose.

Removed it from the exhaust by cracking and splitting it with a saw.

But still thinking of ordering a stainless steel exhaust.

Recap:
Dealer wanted $2,200 for new OE exhaust due to internal rattle.
Local Performance shop wanted $1,400 for new aftermarket exhaust due to internal rattle.
Just had my AC compressor replaced by a long established local German repair shop and mentioned the annoying exhaust rattle. Came back to pick it up and asked about the rattle. I was told they simply readjusted the exhaust system and no more rattle. They did not charge me for the adjustments.
I am just ecstatic about the service received by an "honest" enthusiasts shop! This will obviously be my shop of choice!
Well now that the rattle is gone I feel like I have the equivalent of a new car!
