Quick question - would it be better to use assembly lube on the lifters, or just oil? I googled this question, a got saw about a 50/50 split on both sides, with maybe a slight majority toward assembly lube. Thanks.

With a 16 valve head, you can do either. With an 8 valve head, due to the cam carrier, assembly lube works better. I would say, go with oil.

After reading through all the suggestions and opinions, I think I'm going to do the following compromise:

- Dissassemble all of the lifters, clean them, and fill them up with fresh oil before re-assembling

- Coat the sides and tops of the lifters, along with the cam lobes and bearing caps, with assembly grease.

Sounds like an excellent solution.
