Default MAF lifespan

Wondering if there is any reason to replace a MAF if no malfunction is evident: do they deteriorate over time?

I had to clean mine twice this week to clear up some hesitation: seems fine now but I'm kinda wondering if it's getting old....?

If the MAF is actually mafunctioning, you would get CEL. I doubt the MAF is getting dirty that quickly.

you can measure the MAF with normal gauge, there was instructions somewhere. if you won't get correct Volts during testing, then it's "old".

Just caught that- it wasn't that it was getting dirty again, more that the first cleaning was insufficent.

John...do you have a K&N air filter? I have heard of possible oil from the filter transferring to the MAF if too much is used after cleaning. Just a thought.

Yes, but I've had one for years and am aware of that as an issue. The filter hasn't been oiled in some time.

For what it is worth I do not think there is any magic Porsche pixie dust in the MAF sensor, but rather it's the end caps on the housing that make a 968 or Audi RS2 MAF special. I have run a Volvo 960 MAF to no ill effects and I believe the other somewhat-interchangeable units would work as well. Audi 200 turbo, Saab 9000 (early, non trionic) Saab 900 of some flavors, and so on.

Disclaimer: I have not actually cracked open a 968 MAF sensor module to check for Magic Porsche Pixie Dust (tm.)
