Hmmm... I'm torn between a 968 CS and a much cheaper 944 S2. Those figures seem to tell me there isn't much in it. The car is going to live on the 'ring...

You cannot compare a S2 with a supercharged 968. Huge difference with respect to looks and performance. And hence the price difference...

Yup, driven them both at Lime Rock - same day - SIGNIFICANT. 1:05ish and 1:09ish (with concrete)

Love 968 owners thinking they have a better car just because it looks nicer and even that's debatable...
When I was buying my Porsche I was undecided and was buying either a 968 or a 951 or a 951S or a 944S2. I tried 30 of the variants when I was shopping and finally chose 951S.
To say 968 is quicker than 951S I don't agree with. Only someone who did not drive both in comparison can say that.
They may have similar power outputs 240 bhp versus 250 bhp but everybody knows turbo cars have a better torque characteristics 225 ftlbs v 257 ftlbs. Now performance wise, you can do 0 realistically to improve on the 968 performance whilst for $400 (chip) spent on the 951S and the two cars become non-comparable.
As far as mechanically goes; they are essentially same cars.
Yes engine has variocam and is bigger and different, yes gearbox is different, but suspension parts are the same so people who think 968 handles better think again.
More modern yes - better performer no.
By the way once 951S is modified (by chip only), 60-100mph = 6,5sec.
And Damian in NJ who told you 951S or any 944 to that fact was built by Audi??? Dead wrong - same factory - all variants from 944 on.
However we must love them all and stop getting into this pissing contests.

Simon, the 968's were built at Stuttgart, by Porsche. Were not all previous variants built elsewhere? And please, I'm not knocking 951's. I think they are a hoot to drive. My bugaboo is that with both in stock condition there isn't a whole lot of difference in real world driving, and from what I've seen, when you mod the 951 you can get supercar performance-until the thing goes boom. And that isn't a road I'd like to travel.

Damian, all Porsches including 951's and 968's were built in the same factory Zuffenhausen / Stuttgart. They moved production to - Porsche quote;

You are semi right when you say in the real world there is not much in it between 968 and 951S, but a 951S will pull away from you and eventually it will be gone. It wont be night and day but trust me it will pull away and leave you behind.
As far as modifications are concerned you are right. With the turbo you always want more. Some guys tune their cars to 350bhp and above - reliably? - I would question that. However I have a chip upgrade only since my car had 70K miles on the clock. I now have 150K miles with some serious driving and it's still perfect - nothing exploded yet.
280bhp = still reliable.
As I said both are great cars, your's being the younger brother which looks more modern - and I love the looks - but it can't outrun 951S.
PS. If I could only have 968 Turbo RS...

Well, I'm glad you agreed finally about where the cars were built-although you wouldn't take my word, Eric K's will do fine!
As for the Porsche engineer who says certain 951's were built at Porsche-I've not seen any written confimation of that anywhere, and until I do I'm unconvinced. I doubt Porsche would be building 951's and 968's at Porsche, and S2's at Audi at the same time.
I always say, it's not how fast you go, it's how you go fast. A Subaru WRX will pull away from me too, but who cares? I just hope everyone enjoys their Porsche as much as I do mine.

Simon, there is a difference between the 2 cars suspensions, its the swaybar size. 968 standard swaybar size were the same as 944 turbo S and the M030 968 had 30mm front and 19mm rear 3 way adjustable swaybars.
BTW, I am building a 968 turbo S replica, already have the turbo RS engine, working on the rest
