It's about the bucks -mainly- and the fact that a lot of folks, Porsche people too, who don't know much about the 924/944/968 line.
A 230/240 HP, 2990cc, vario quad cam 4 cylinder ... aww, that' s plain B.S. my 82' 928 (V8) is lucky to support those numbers
928 > 0-60 in 5.8 VS 968 > 0-60 in 6.1, 1/4 mile in low 14's.
No way!!!
I never heard of a 968 until someone on the 928 forum wistfully suggested strapping the 968, 4cyl vario heads on a a reamed out (6.0/6.4 L) 928. The 968 appears to be a great car just no numbers, hence, no exposure.
The 928 had a 18 year production run resulting in over 50,000 units raping the asphalt. How many 968's snuck out of the factory let alone reached the USA?
As to price.
Bump your asking price against the 928's on Ebay. 928 owners looking to sell are often disappointed.
To make matters worse... as the sales of your low production 968's go so do are 928's .
Fortunately, the 928/968 pilots like other Porsche Fanatics seem to be die-hard, Brand and Model lovers, we really like/love our cars.

I have a 993 Targa for sale and I too have had many "tire kickers" and "experts" call me and tell me what my car should be worth or offer me lowball offers. I think it just takes a little while for the right buyer to find you. Your car seem real clean and I think you will find a buyer at your price or close to it. Good luck.

From the other side of the wallet-I am looking, patiently, for a nice 968 or S2 cabriolet. Bear in mind I own an early 944 and, although no expert, have tried to do my homework. Our cars were basicly orphaned by Stuttgart and the prices have plunged. I am using Excellance as a rough guide and have seen a few very overpriced cars. Now I know what my 'mint' 944 is worth to me-much more than reality due to time, cost of repairs, upgrades, etc-but not to a buyer (It is for sale now). So the intrinsic value to the owner may be more than the market value to a buyer.

Unfortunately, we are all being penalized by the 911 crowd!

Before I share my opinion, understand one thing. I absolutely love the
928/944/968 line of cars. Problem is, most people don't.

Most enthusiasts of these cars have something in common. We either have
one or had one. So, the majority of the people that looked at your car
have a lot more cars in mind:

Boxster
Z3
SL Mercedes
Tons of Asian cars (300ZX, Supra, RX-7)
Corvette
Mustang
The Vipers are dropping in the low 30's won't be long before they hit the
mid 20's.
Jag's

My point is, especially to those who think the 968's will go up in value
is, no they won't. Not as a whole. The real pristine garage queen ones
will. There is far too much completion in the sports car market. Lets
face it, the "average" non Porsche person the 968 is no different than a
1983 944 (not meant to be a rip on the 83 944)

Don't believe me?

My sister can't tell the difference between a 924 and a 951 or my 81 928
and a GTS. That is the "average" person. The number of 968/944 enthusiast are getting thin. People don't know these cars anymore. Some of the last publications (road and track) were not very nice to the 968 or 928 in their final years. People read these. We have a biased opinion of the cars. Lets face it a C5 Corvette, Boxter, Z3 or even the last generation RX-7 looks newer, and doesn't have the stigma of being the un-Porsche to the non water pumper P-car world.

Personally, I hope the prices drop a BUNCH on these "unwanted" cars! I wouldn't mind having a 968 M030 track car, a 968 Turbo and a 968 tip coupe for a daily driver for my very soon to be wife who refuses to learn how to drive a manual.

Regards,

Scott, I am with you on this. I would love to own a cab tip for daily drive and get rid of my 540ia. Just change to snow tires for winter and I should be ok most of the time. Hopefully one pops up someday within reason. I wouldn't mind buying a car that needed sme work.

Little off topic, but are you some type of investor? Do you know who Benjamin Graham is?

Intrinsic value: the value of an option if it were to expire today.
Benjamin Graham: author of "Security Analysis (1934)".

Sorry, I teach investments for a living...
