See:

IIRR few years earlier they where thinking Volvo/Renault V6 for 944. They were doing lots of consultancy work for Volvo at the time.

V-4s are in that category of motors, along with I-3s, that are both inherently bad (like I-4s and V-6s), but also have few redeeming qualities, and hence are very rare. I can't see Porsche EVER using one...but then, they're full of surprises, they might come up with some vehicle in which it would actually solve a problem.

I was quite interested by the idea, but it turned out that the high pressure fuel system and the electronics will never in a million years graft into a 968, so I dropped it entirely. It's a shame, really, because it would truly be a perfect drop-in solution, exactly the horsepower I'm looking for (400) with the perfect inherent balance of an I-6 and the turbo powerband I love, in an all-aluminum package.

Tell you what, if I were ever to have to swap a different engine into a 968, it would probably be a Toyota/Lexus 1UZ-FE (NA or twin-turbo, depending on the application it could go either way) rather than a SBC or even a VR6 (which, sadly, is only available as an iron-block motor).

I love iron blocks. Simpler to machine, bosses don't break off, threads don't strip, head bolts always torque OK, etc. Both Fe and Al have pros and cons. The VR6 though is a stupid engine. I mean the timing chain is on the back, among other problems.

Eh, there's no such thing as a perfect engine (or car, for that matter). I'll just say that I wish I could have an I4 NA with 350hp and 350tq from idle to redline that was CA smog legal, runs on 87, gets 30mph, and is cheap and easy to repair.

all of these posts remind me why the automakers from both sides of the pond have had wonderful results with smaller displacement v8s over the years. fits into just about any space and cost... with fuel-injection, the v8 idles smoother than ever.... one of the best swaps on a budget is a GM all-aluminum 5.3 litre truck engine. find one that's gone off the road in an ice-storm or whatever.... blocks can be had for short money and blueprinted with great results. this engine is extremely, well-suited for the lightweight 944.

wow.

btw, speaking of v8s, lots of Panameras here at the "24 hours......"

well since this thread is purely hypothetical, why not a zr1 engine? or even a m3 v8? Those are nice engines too, especially on a well balanced car like the 968...

Is that even geometrically possible?

That splitter's pretty horny, though...

I was waiting to see when someone would post those pics!

Geometrically possible? Anything is, once you bust out the plasma cutter and the mig welder.
