Default Water sloshing!

I'm having heat problems: the climate control is broken and many times the heat is out of countrol: too hot. I think it's the sensor tube , which I had a lot of trouble reinstalling this summer. My guess is it's disconnected.

It's now too cold for me to work on my car so it's at the shop for this.

I also have noticed an odd issue in recent months: once the car heats up properly, and only for a little while after that's happened, I hear water moving around to my right: in the dash somewhere. Slosh slosh slosh. It stops after a minute or two and only recurs when the car is started from cold and has come up to temp.

Any thought on this?

Sounds like your heater core is out.

That's my experience as well: the car generally delivers too much heat.

If you are hearing the sloshinging sound after you shut the car off then it is most likely the thermostat failing. That sound is water boing in the heater core.

Do you ever catch a very faint whiff of coolant smell in the cockpit, or do you have to clean the inside your windshield frequently because seems to get covered with a slight "fog"? I'm with Raj, the heater core will cause a sloshing sound like that if it has a pin hole leak that lets air in. It doesn't take much air to cause that sound.

The noise, as mentioned, only occurs after the car has warmed up from a cold state, and only then: after a little while it goes away. No coolant smell, no windshield problems.

p5th: please help me keep my request for assistance on track. I don't think two cars' problems can be successfully discussed simultaneously,

Both sound to be 1) leaking heater core and 2) blocked HVAC drain (ice??)

luckily for both the heater core is a pain in the *** to get to, and if working on the HVAC everything dash related needs to be moved to get to it all...

There are no signs of a leaking core: smell, etc. My mechanic considered this but doesn't think it's the problem. He cleaned out the area at the end of the sensor tube: there's a small fan there. And he refilled the coolant: it was down a liter or so. On the drive home I could keep the temp control at 12:00 for the first time in a long time. We'll see: I will be immobilized over the next day or so: snowstorm.

The HVAC Drain Pan Tube could be stopped up. You have to pull the radio and cubby to reach the tube as it is right behind them to drain outside. This tube should be cleaned out every so often and diluted bleach sprayed into the catch pan to kill mold. Cover the carpet when doing this unless you like colored up carpet.

Cheers,
Larry

It's the drain for the HVAC evaporator coil in your dash. There is actually a tube that runs from the plastic box containing the coil in the dash allowing water to drain out. It empties below the car, right around the torque tube as I recall. If you are lucky, you can find it from under the car and CAREFULLY work a small flexible item back up through it. Be prepared for a gush a water to come out.

Wish I could remember more, but it's been a long time since messing with that item. Look on the 968 Katalog on-line at Porsche (pdf) illustration 813-00 and you'll see it. Has a tight bend in it too, the little bugger.

Without treatment, your next step will be occasional water coming out the vents in the summer time with AC fan on high. Ask me how I know.
