I think I read it on rennlist a while ago, or maybe not I could be wrong, but I suppose there's no harm in making sure. Looks like a fun holiday project!

Sealant is required--see page 13-20 of the 944 Repair Manual Vol I. It's about oil control--part of the "ladder" combines with a recess in the block to deliver oil to the suction side of the oil pump in the front of the engine. So, the specification is for Loctite 574 in the area of the oil intake, and at the rear to seal the ladder against the block so you don't get an oil leak outside the area of the rear main seal. Use a small (1" diameter) roller you can get from one of the home stores. Doesn't take much sealant.

Thanks. Easy enough to do at this point. I need to really look through the 968 manual as I did not see it there.

Cool, I'm not crazy!

I noticed a lot of stuff in the 944 books is left out in the 968 books for "efficiency"...

I think the philosophy is that each new model's workshop manual builds on the previous one. So, for a complete 968 set you also need the 924 & 944 books. I have seen some details in the earlier manuals not repeated in the newer ones. Assembling the bottom end of the engine is the same from 944's forward, so that's where they left the instructions.

That sucks. Guess I need to find a pdf of the 944 manual.

UPDATE: Found and downloaded. I love the internet and a fast ethernet line

Yea its nice of Porsche to leave those things out in the 968 manual. When your all done spray the motor with a high temp clear coat to keep it looking nice and make it easier to clean. I have done this to the last 5 motors and they all still look great.

I blew the head gasket in my daily driver 968 ('95 coupe with 120k miles). I was going to just replace the head gasket but decided that the engine was getting a bit tired and it was time.

Balance shafts have new bearings and covers are back in place. Old bearings were not bad (see below). New rings on the pistons and they are back in place with new rod bearings as well. Sorry, meant to take more pics but when you hands are covered in oil, it's no fun to stop, clean up, and then snap a shot. Next is the oil pan and then some waiting till my head gets back. Dropped that off this morning, hope it doesn't take to long.

Putting the oil pan gasket and pan on with the engine on the stand makes the job soooooooo much easier. It allows you to focus on tightening the bolts in the proper order, which hopefully assures no leaking.
