More work done this weekend, got the head on and cams in place, then started on the front end. I need to remember to get a few pics of the main bearings as they were starting to wear.

Looks like fun Tim!

Just curious, did you do anything to the cylinders or just put on new rings? I've been trying to learn about alusil cylinders and I've found a lot of info, some say new rings and old cylinders is fine and some say the opposite. I know you have a lot of experience with building and romping on engines so I'd love to hear your views!

Excellent job looks well done! Just make sure those cam teeth, chain and vario tensioner pads are great?

Cylinders were in excellent shape and I did nothing to them, so I just put in new rings and installed. I've never heard of old cylinders and new rings being bad, unless you mean "beat up and old cylinders". I'm not an expert at building engines, I just do it out of need (I'm thrifty and like doing things myself). I have installed new rings in "old" cylinders in my track car and it made great HP afterwards.

Cam teeth are fine and the chain and tensioner have less than 20K miles on them.

Thanks Tim. That's exactly what I did with my '95 (same as you, the cylinders were perfect and I figured new rings would be fine). It has amazing compression and unbelievable seat-of-pants power. But after doing it, some people told me I got lucky and that I should have lapped the cylinders... I guess it was more than just luck.

Carry on sir! Thanks for sharing your rebuild.

Alusil blocks are not like a typical hone, it has been said by Sunnen that when the process is finished when oiled it is the equivalent to oiled glass that the rings ride on. Thats SMOOTH! The silicone crystals do not wear like conventional bores and thus a break in time is not needed! So that being said when bores still have good finish with the right kind of rings made to run in Alusil with the right end gap there will be no problems, you will have like new compression and oil consumption!

On another note I have seen dozens of 944 S2 turbo and 968's motors with varying combos, tracked and street from all over the country!

The 968 engine blocks with there piston squirters are always hands down bye far the best looking cylinder bores, maybe it has something to do with the lighter pistons and rods, lighter crank and dual mass flywheels but they are always excellent looking even a 195K mile motor was almost perfect when torn down!

The cylinder bores for 2 out of the 3 engines I've torn down have looked really nice. The only problem with the 3rd engine was the #4 rod sticking out of the side of the block. Cylinder 1-3 looked great

Just about ready to go back in but I've run out of time. Busy weekend and then business travel is going to take me out for a while. Hopefully the engine will go back in by mid January.

Yes I did, even posted it here on RL. Problem is that I can't find the pic at the moment or I would post it!

EDIT: Found them

What do you mean by "non-modified?"
