First, slightly oil the threads and mating surfaces. Then tighten to 18 ft lbs. Once both nuts are at 18 ft lbs then tighten each 90 degrees.

Info comes from page 13-34 of the workshop manual.

Make sure to use new nuts, they are one time use only

Why is that? I've always bought new ones but wondered why you can't reuse the old ones? Are they coated?

I always thought the studs should be replaced, if anything, but most people don't so I didn't either. Just new nuts.

On the 911's the nuts and bolts must be replaced.

Tension is kept with bolt stretch and not the friction of the nut on the cap alone. I think you can get maybe two cycles of use from the bolts, so if you plastigage you are done.

The little grooves on the nuts flatten out when they are torqued, hence one time used only. The rods aren't torqued using the torque to yield method so rod stud stretch isn't a huge concern. Torque angle is more of a calculated distance between the nut and the other end of the rod, eliminating any variables. Such as resistance between the threads, rough spot on the threads, things like that.
