I would be churning approx 5k rpm in the turbo at most in 6th gear with plenty of reserve. Find me a safe place and I would love to see what she can do.

BTDT.
Not in a pcar, but with bikes, and a couple others. Love living near montana.

I almost got a speeding ticket in my bike (when they had the speed limits for 4 years or so in the 90's). But mr. officer let me off with little infraction. Best quote "the first time I measured you, you were doing 90, but I could see your rear tire was off the ground while you were braking".

to all those thinking of doing this, get a smart phone, get the heads up display and mount it somewhere easy to view. You shouldn't be looking at your speedo at all during this.

155mph=227 ft/sec. Almost a football field.

in defensive driving they say it takes almost 0.4 of a second reaction time.
= 90 feet before you can do anything.

Your field of view should be as far as can focus down the road.

there was a great shot of a road, where we used to ask people where do you normally rest your vision? pick a spot. Had a number on the left. Then the next slide was a shot where most people kept their eyes in the middle, with a freight train going through, and more than 50% of people wouldn't have seen it until it was too late to stop at highway speeds. Look up.

you can't do a top speed run on the east coast.

you'll cover 10 miles + of road. 5 miles your way and 5 miles the other way.

you'll be seen by someone and go to jail.

i-70, 80, 90 nope. out west ? nope.

there's a place i know where you can do it. sections of i-29, in Iowa, South Dakota and North Dakota.... sections of i-10 in Texas. you used to have no law enforcement in King Ranch, Texas. but not anymore.... some state highways in Idaho, Nevada, and Utah are some of the only places left... but no interstates (out there) are safe for this sort of thing. you mean to say interstates in Kansas, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah are unsafe for top speed runs ? that's right; don't even think of it. 25 years ago, yes. not anymore.... just my 0.02...

While I carry a little more drag with a big rear wing and large front splitter all I got at Road America was just under 130. I think I will be faster with less aero but above 125 there is a lot of drag for less than 200 rwhp to overcome. It take a lot of miles to find top speed. After racing I don't really want to be running that fast on public roads...risk vs reward!!

[QUOTE=odurandina;8084551]our older, 968 engines have lost some power. the gasoline sucks, and the cats are slightly clogged. under maximum breathing situations, these factors cause problems. but the '68 engine is a beast. get rid of the cat, get the right muffler and the power comes back up.

you won't ever see 156 mph unless you make some changes.

Not exactly true had mine over 156 mph,no sweat or drama the car felt rock solid & still had some power left. This pics was taken at 210 klms an hour which I beleive is a little over 130 mph with one hand on the steering & the other one holding the camera. Here again the car felt vey solid & safe.Wer'e making a big fuss here in the US/CDN about going over 150 mph but let's not forget that on the Autobahn in Germany it's a daily occurance.

Mr. Ernie,

your speedo has about 9~11 mph over built in at that speed.

the best way to prove it is to measure your tires with a tape measure.... then do a top speed run in 5th gear and do a gps speed calculation when you hit the liimiter.... and also make a mental note of what your speedo is reading.... with your tire size youll be able to calculate your actual speed at the redline... and you'll see your gps agrees. then you'll be pissed when you see how far off the speedo is. ooops.

run the right sized tires, (25.6" instead of the 25.0" many of you run with the cup wheels), and you'll make exactly 25 mph per 1000 rpm and 162 mph IN 6TH GEAR before reaching the limiter. but by the time you get to 145 even running the correct (big) tires, you're speedo will still be reading about 148~149.... i seriously doubt any of your cars (with the exception of Dino's and a few other folks) will go much faster than that.... when i got my top speed, my speedo was at about 164 (about 2 mph off !!). that's about the best i can do and still have it read 100 mph at 100 mph... and all that after turning back the speedo dial about 4 mph and running the correct sized tires ! do a rennlist search... our speedo defect is standard fare for most of the '80s and '90s P-cars....

my speedo reads exactly 100 mph at 4000 rpm (correct to at least 99.8 %) and my odometer reads 99.9 % accurate over a long stretch of interstate....

why ? cuz i'm running the correct sized tires.

I have a gps verified 148 mph right hand turn i take at a circuit called Bathurst called the kink. Some say it's the fastest touring car corner in the world. (insert can of worms). I think I drift maybe five lanes laterally in it at that speed before straightening up and hitting the brakes for all I have. Race pads. New discs. Race fluid. Always. Racing there for three days over Easter next week. The 968 eats it. I know that's a litte short of 156 but not far.

I see that track a lot on TV. It has to be one of the best tracks in the world. I would love to drive it!! I totally believe your speed through there, but it has to be helped by the downhill approach, right?

It is an awesome circuit. The elevation changes are part of its joy. You climb a mountain, then traverse across it, then come back down it. Coming back down it ends with Bathurst mountain straight, then another little rise then that kink. A friend had a 997 Carrera with slightly reduced gearing ( ten percent) and he hits the revlimited in sixth at the kink. It's Fast scary and exhilarating.

Check out this video on YouTube:
enjoy this one. At the point where you go under the Vodafone sign at the top, about half way through, you are doing near 200kmh in a 968 and the turn is is blind. You just see the horizon! Also note that e f1 car is at its top speed very very early on on that straight, so yes the downhill sure helps my little four cylinder 968 get along.

And be grateful for good roll cages in this one
