Another 968 vs 928 thread
The more I try to get excited about someday owning a 928 the happier I am with the 968. I like the GTS but I really have to search hard for a 928 that I think looks as good as a 968. I know I am preaching to the choir here but how many of you 968 owner have owned a 928 or wanted to own one?

I know Harvey (H2) has a 928 and a 968 concurrently.
My dad has a 928 and I get to drive it once in a while, and I get to work on it all the time, so I feel like it's one of my cars. I mean I know way more about that car than he does. What do you want to know?
The car is drop dead gorgeous, I seriously think it looks better than a 968 from the rear and the side, and I think the 968 wins from the front - I much prefer the raised fenders of the 968. I like the 944/968 interior way more though. That gauge pod is too '70s, but the rest of the dash is very nice.
Many years back, before I got into Porsches, my dad had a 928S and my mom had a 944, and after working on both and driving them a couple of times, I chose the 944, and I went and bought my own. One defining moment was when I was a senior in high school and I had a old rickety mercedes. I asked to borrow the 944 and I had a blast showing it off. Later I asked to borrow the 928, but it wouldn't start.
Ever since then, I occasionally reevaluate my choice, and I stick with a 944/968.

after owning 968 for 3 years, have been thinking that old 928S with manual tranny might be cool - stripped to min weight, and v8 grunt could do the trick. as a GTS, don't like the idea of heavy weight GT car - at least not to use as a sports car. maybe as a daily driver.

I don't really see how you can go wrong with either car if you are prepared for the non-911 Porsche ownership experience. I've owned 4 928s, am currently parting a 968 (which I have driven), and my father owned several 944s back in the 80's and 90's. I love the looks of all of them. The 968 looks relatively modern, even today. A non-GTS 928 looks a little more dated to me, but painting the rear spoiler and installing GTS/968 mirrors on an '87+ makes a huge difference. Both cars are comfortable for tall drivers, which is rare among sports cars. The 928 seats are awesome and a big upgrade over the 944/911 seats of that era IMHO. Looks are subjective, but I love the looks of both. I'd give the edge to the 928 as its width (6" wider) makes it more imposing. I'm not a fan of convertibles, and the 928 didn't come as one, so no point in comparing a 968 convertible to a 928 coupe. Both the 928 and 968 are far more practical than my Esprit.
If I had to pick one, I would pick the 928. It was the top of the line model for the time and was Porsche's no expense spared offering for a generation. The complexity of the car is overstated and it is effectively as rare as the 968 (most people aren't aware of either model).
At some point, I will buy a keeper 968 (or 951).

The 928 is not as rare as the 968. When people ask what my car is and I say 968, it's always "huh? What's that?" Some people say "oh do you mean 928?" or "is that the one with the V8?"
I much prefer the 911/944 seats - to each their own. I'm sure it has a lot to do with which car one chooses. Never thought about painting the spoiler though - I'll have to run that one by my dad!

I know that more 928s were built than 968s. Notice that I wrote "effectively". 99% of people aren't aware of either car. Plus, the rarity of the 968 is somewhat offset by the large numbers of 944s out there. As for the seats, why do you prefer the 911/944 seats. The 928 seats offer more padding and support which is why I prefer them. The 928 seats are heavier though.

Way more people know what a 928 is then a 968. Many people will confuse the 968 for 1 of two porsches...a 944 or a 928. In fact...last time i had someone confuse my car...i was sitting at a red light in New York City, a Family was crossing the street. The mother/wife noticed my car and said "oooh, thats a nice car, what kind is it"? The father/Husband replied, "thats a porsche 944", then the son replied to him and said "no dad, thats a Porsche 928". 928's were sold here for 18 model years vs 4 model years for the 968. Movies like Scarface & Risky Business gave the 928 popularity. Lastly, over 26,000 928's were sold in North America, and less then 5,000 968's were sold in North America. Thats over 5 times the amount. You really cannot compare the 2 imho.
As for the 928 being an old mans Porsche, i have to disagree with that statement as well. The 928 weighs about as much as a BMW E46 M3 or an Infiniti G37 Coupe, and depending on model...is about as powerfull (give or take a few ponies). They are all GT cars. I wouldnt consider either an old mans car. In fact, i wouldnt consider any well balanced/powerfull GT an old mans car. The reallity is, i doubt the median age of 928 and 968 owners is much different.

Damian is 100% correct regarding the cost to maintain the 928's. Absolutely beautiful car when new and remains so today except parts and shop costs are extremely expensive.

the difference between the 944 and 968 is that the 968s are better built cars than the 944, and still, have plenty of easy, "do-it-yourself" stuff to offer.. lots of vendors so you don't get killed buying parts.
the 9-2-8...... oh, we could be here for hours.

I used to, from when my dad and I would drive around together. But 2 hard drive crashes later, I don't think I ever backed up those pics.
I prefer the 944 seats because they are more rigid and supportive of my back, they hold me better in turns, they look more sporty, and they weigh less. I have nothing against the 928 seats, they're just not for me. When I look at my dad's S4, I get a boner. When I hear the engine rev, the boner gets bigger. But when I sit inside the car and drive it, it just feels like a Mercedes, and *boom* boner is gone. That's why I'm glad my dad has one. I get to look at it and listen to it, which is plenty of fun!
