Default Freakin' hood badge

I've had a 'spare' hood badge on hand for years and finally decided it was time to install it, given the beat condition of the original. I had to destroy the original to remove it: nut/post fitting was stripped so I couldn't get the nut off.

Well, the replacement badge is different: much more rounded than the real one, which is practically flat. The rubber gasket supplied with the new badge cannot be made to fit the badge, either: too small. BOTH badges have the same part number!

Sunset is shipping me a new one, cost over $100.00, but I worry: will I have the same problems???

I've done this on both the 968 and the 951, it isn't ever fun.

Bumping: any concrete assistance with this issue much appreciated. Also: if you have an old-style flatter badge in excellent shape (with gasket) to sell, please get in touch with me.

Thanks!

Very common PITA complaint across all forums.

Some people place the new gasket in very hot water to help make it pliable prior to installation.
Some people will place blue masking tape on the corners of the rubber gasket and 'pull' on the tape to help stretch the gasket onto the badge during installation.
Some people just give up and reuse the old gasket.

A search of the forums (I know it's come up in 993 forum) will provide grief counseling.

I'm sort of glad it is not just me. I thought I had lost all mechanical ability when I could not make the gasket fit all the way around. I'm sure it was funny to watch, pull one side out, the opposite pops out of place, (repeat about 50 times). I just gave up and left the top under the edge, it's not noticeable too much.

Thanks all. None of the threads and discussions here and in PM's I've been sent reference the completely different profile of the 'new' badge, which would not seem to lay flat on the hood.

Anyone else running into this?

I've always used the inexpensive repro crest and have not had a fitment problem. Heating up the gasket helps, I also tack the gasket to the badge with some contact cement. A credit card to the like can help get the gasket to lie properly on the panel when installing.

Some people forgo the nuts and instead glue the crest down, if someone tries to steal it they do less damage in that case. Naturally you'd need a crest that fit flat or could be formed to fit properly.

How often do people try to steal Porsche crests? I thought it was mostly just Tri-Stars, Leapers, Spirit of Ecstasy...Ecstacies...Spirits of...whatever. Stand-up badges, rather than flat ones.

Replacing the badge is a PITA. My issues are with the gasket being too small as well. I figured out the blue tape trick for myself and it works great! Don't over-tighten those stupid little nuts.
