Default Oil Cooler

Guys,

Are any of you having success running an oil cooler with your 968 on the track? If so, what's your set up? I'm getting oil temps of 260 with ambient temps in the 60-70 range. Not ideal and a hp killer when racing, especially enduro's.

Thanks!

All 968's come with oil coolers from the factory. Its mounted on the passenger side front bumper ahead of the wheel well. It could be that you need a bigger unit for track duty. You can convert your factory oil filter housing to run a bigger cooler

Joe,

I replaced my stock oil cooler with a larger Spearco unit...placed in the same location.

I run about 250 in the summer months...and I've got a turbo set-up, so I would think you could get lower temps than me.

Thanks Guys,

My stock cooler does not provide the level of cooling needed to keep the engine running at a "safe" temperature. I've heard of a couple of options and needed to get feedback from the guys who run their cars on the track at high stress levels.

Thx.

I recently came across an option for twin coolers. From a chap on this very forum.
But he then seemed to dissapear..
Its buy using the second cooler from a Tiptronic car. IE the tiptronic oil cooler. Its mounted as a mirror image on the opposite side to the normal cooler. using the tip brackets , ducts ,,etc etc ..So your basically doubling up on the amount of cooling...
You just have to fab up some pipes to run from the normal cooler etc...
Its something im looking at fitting to my car,, sometime.. Ive got all the parts, its just a matter of fitting it all up....
If you manage to do the job, i for one , would be interested in your outcome...

I installed twin oil coolers with fabricated aluminum ducting on my 951 a couple years ago. A search for 'twin oil coolers' under my user name should turn up a thread. Here are some of the pics.

Very nice fabrication work!

I'm sure it helps incredibly well...Plus you get the added bonus of probably more than 2 quarts add'l oil in your system.

RS Barn installed a similar setup on my car and the twin coolers worked flawlessly. I did not have a numbered oil or water temp gauge last season but the temp on the water gauge ran noticeably lower in sprint race conditions.

Firehawk, your car is already in excellent hands. Have you talked to the master about it?

The internals of the tip cooler are different due to the properties of the trans oil being thinner. Meaning the internal passages are smaller. Not the best for trying to keep the oil cool.

Raj,

Will at PMR is close to having a new oil cooler available but I want to identify options in case his protoype does not test well. The racing in warm weather puts a real toll on my car and the loss of hp is evident after 20 minutes of racing in 70 plus weather.

Moook, just use a 2nd oil cooler. Not sure, why that would be so hard to do.

Raj.
Yes i could do that.
Its just on the tip cooler the connectins for the pipework is all at one end. Whearas on the "normal" engine cooler it has a conection at both ends...
BUT
Ive just had a quick look at the tip cooler today, + the thickness of the oilways look identical to the engine cooler. Ill have to "research" a bit deeper...
