Default Transmission mount.

I did a search and didn't really get what I wanted.

Here is the story. I have had my car for about 1.5 years it has 147xxx miles on it. I just put on Koni Yellows in the rear, and will be doing the fronts this weekend. Any time I go over some washboard roads it sounds like the transmission is moving and smacking the hatch area. So on to my question. Does any one have any pictures of mounting area for the transmission? Should I replace with rubber or solid? (I know this is a matter of opinion, I do not currently track the car but would like to DE as soon as everything else is up to snuff). Or do you guys think it could be something else? Like I said it only happens when going over heavy washboard roads. When I try to move the trans from side to side it didn't seem to move but didn't try to jack it up by the trans so I could see the movement there. It literally sounds as if someone is taking a rubber mallet and smacking the bottom of the hatch then it goes away and all is fine. Car drives strong and shifts smooth.

TIA!!!

Best,
Aaron

Solid mount is for racing, way too noisy for daily driving.

Do you think that noise could be caused by the trans mount failing?

I'm looking at this page: http://www.autoatlanta.com/model/968-92-95/306-00.htm and wondering if all I will need is the rubber mount (number 2) Guess I would need to get in there and look. With 147xxx I would bet it needs replaced.

Thanks!

After looking online here it seems like I should avoid Auto Atlanta. Not that I would have gotten the parts from them anyway. ImagineAuto is in my back yard and having worked for them pricing can't get much better.

Have you inspected the underside of the car and looked at the mount?

IMHO, if you need to replace the mount do not use a solid mount.

I will do that tonight. I have not inspected it yet (I know, I know) I was just throwing it out there in case this sounded like something you guys have seen. I am replacing my pads and rotors tonight (assuming the right parts came in this time) and will let you guys know what I find out. I am thinking I will go rubber.

Does the drop mount (the part that runs from front to back) actually screw in to the rubber mount portion and then is held in by the bracket to the cross member?? If you look at the PET diagram you will see what I mean. I hope.

There could be a number of reasons why your transmission is shifting around. Was the transmission taken apart for pinion bearings? It could be that one of the dowel pins that aligns the transmission to the torque tube bell housing is missing. It could also be a loose coupler or a transmission mount.
As you stated, the transmission mount has a rubber section that is pressed in using 2 pins. You will need to press the pins out to remove the rubber mount.
Your best bet might be to remove the transmission and check everything. Let us know if you need a DIY.

Sounds good man. Thanks! I did it on my 951 when I replaced my clutch. Should not be a problem for me to remove this. Looking through my records it does not look like my car ever had the PB failure.

I have solid mounts on my 944 (engine and trans), the 968 mounting pieces are completely different for the trans.

So Lindsay Racing and Tarett Engineering are both misrepresenting their (944) mounts as working on the 968? Lindsay says their piece fits all 944 & 968 from '86 on. Tarett indicates that you need the 944 crossmember/hanger to use their trans mount on the 968.

Thanks for the heads-up. I planned on switching to solid mounts for my 968 race car during the winter. I guess we'll try it anyway.

Yes, you can use a 944 solid mount on a 968 trans, if you convert to a 944 crossmember. There is no solid solution for the 968 crossmember and mount, and I have yet to measure the two I have in my garage to see if the difference in height makes the trans sit at the same level. Basically, I'm worried about stress on CV joints. I've had Lindsey and Kokeln ones, and I have both 5 and 6 speed boxes (and their respective mounting systems) sitting here.

from what I can see you would use the Lindsey Racing one with part number: 944 375 287 04

You can see the picture here : http://www.autoatlanta.com/model/944-85-88/306-00.htm
