Default RE: 968 Gear set

Guys,

I finally got my OEM gears (3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th) back from my original mechanic after putting in shorter gears to go with my turbo build.

I'll be selling them, and wanted to let the 968 board know before anybody else.

You can privately E-mail me if interested.

Jason, good thing you got them back after a few yrs. They would have been in their swap meet otherwise .

Jason

Where di you get short gears? Has it helped or hurt or is that race track dependent? What's the top speed now? How much do they cost? I have no 3/4 gear right now and had to run the last race on Sunday going from 2-5 and it was slow. So the trans is getting rebuilt anyway.

Mike,
I think it has helped by keeping my engine in the sweet spot more of the time...

My top speed has been sacrificed, though, with a top speed now at 152...But, truth be told, I've not felt it...even at Watkins Glen. Maybe if I was closer to VIR, I'd worry about it, but not with Summit Point, NJ Motorsports, Limerock and the Glen.

The cost, from Powerhaus II was $750 per gear.

If you need anything let me know.

Thanks Jason

Are short geared final drives available? I'm just not sure I want to spend the 3-4 to rebuild the t/a and another 3!!!!

I think you can buy a different R&P...But, I'd check directly with Powerhaus II to make sure.

I'm surprised at the cost to rebuild...Why so much?

That is what I have been lead to believe it costs. Any idea on what a refreshening of the gear box should cost?

Hi Mike,

There is no different R&P available for our cars that I know of. This would be most desireable and I did a considerable amount of checking on this 2 years ago. Also, Powerhaus did not have any 968 short gear sets as of this year.

I don't think the short gears are appropriate for M/O as you would definitely "run out of gear" (in 6th) on the back straight, and considering that (M/O) as your "home" track, I'd stick with your stock gearing.

Ciao.

I've talked to Albins(they make most of the gears) about the R&P, they were interested in making one, but told me they would need a standard to copy.
I am considering it but have to find out if the 968 box will be strong enough for my turbo project.

I spoke with Karl, from Racer's Edge, a while ago...And he had a different R&P in his 968 at one point. He offered to sell it to me when I was contemplating the gearing issue for my car.

So, based on that, I have to believe there is another R&P available.

Since Karl had one...I have to disagree and say 'Yep' there is one.

He could have had a custom one made (at some expense).
