Default Oil Pan Installation HELP!

I am trying to put the oil pan in, and I'm having all sorts of problems. For one thing, there is a rubber gasket that sits between the oil pan and the bell housing and I can't get the oil pan past that rubber strip.......not to mention lining up the gasket.

Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.

Rob, that doesn't sound right. The oil pan gasket sits betwen the pan and block. Is your car early model where they had the protective plastic shielding on the bell housing?
I suppose you are trying to do this with the engine in the car. I would start with edges and skip every other hole to start. Also, make sure you apply sealant on the corners to avoid any leaks.

thanks Raj,

This car has a thick rubber gasket (sound absorber: 944.116.473.00) attached to what appears to be the front clutch cover (or protective plate: 944.116.403.04). I am having problems getting the pan / gasket over that rubber sound absorber.

I am thinking of taking the sound absorber off, so the rear of the oil pan is not interferred with by that part.

Oh yeas, I know exactly what you are talking about. Its foam and was used in earlier cars. They went away from it on later cars. I have seen these things cpmpleted soaked in oil from rear main leaks.
Remove it, the factory did as well on later cars. Your other choice is to remove the six 5mm bolt that hold that cover plate and then install the oil pan gasket.

Thanks Raj, that is my line of thinking as well. I will keep everyone posted on the progress. But it will have to wait until Saturday...I am heading out on another 5 days of business travel today.
