A picture is worth.....
I needed to take my cluster out and while I understand you can do it without removing the wheel, I thought this would be a good opportunity to photo illustrate the work involved.
Here is everything removed.
I've use butt connectors to wire the new clockspring
The New Clockspring installed.
Some (sloppy) dremel work to accept the new clockspring...its ok it won't show.
installed....this always bugs me that this is not level with the dash- would others mind checking to see if its just me.
And connect the wires.
and done.

Burning Brakes
It is suppose to be level, the clamp on the steering column can be loosened to adjust, the clamp screw can be reached from the bottom when that cover is removed. I know this from when I removed my dash.

Steve, after our conversation on the phone, I made 100 % certain that my ground wire was a perfect connection. All worked out incredible... What a sick addition to my 968. I owe you a huge Thank you !!

Has anyone looked into whether the new 997 steering wheels could be converted to a 968 - I'm thinking a multi function sport wheel would be a great addition if it could be made to fit?????

997 wheels are not highly desirable, as there's a lot of electronic clutter to deal with, despite fitment probably being doable after machine work. but i think they're a step down from the 996 and CS wheels in the beauty dept (subjective).............. for you new-to-968 owners, your airbags are getting old.... this is a thread that should be brought back every so often. you can kill two birds by deleting the hideous stock wheel and replacing it with a very nice 996 update from Evilbay... and new, safer airbag either from Suncoast/Sunset Porsche, Evilbay or dismantler.

Car radios for 968
To the car radio (earlier in this thread):
The CxR2x0 "Porsche" branded Beckers are as you may know totally unreadable in a 968 without a modification to the display.
The alternative I have ended up with is the Becker Traffic Pro. The display of this unit is perfect for the 968, and it is the only radio with a display I have experienced which is well readable in direct sunlight in the cabrio. It looks exactly the same as the CxR2x0s, expect for the labelling of some buttons. I have transferred that plastic front plate to mine, so it even says "Porsche".
The dual FM radio is even better, it has a CD plus aux input for MP3, and of course you get GPS navigation and speedtraps (requires hooking up the speedo, the reverse lamp plus a GPS antenna, of course).
There is a whole range of Traffic Pros to choose from, and many would be suitable (I have collected a full table of the differences, if anyone are interested).

Old thread resurrection time. The project moves forward and the parts bin grows smaller. I bought a non air bag 968 CS steering wheel that needs to fit on the airbag shaft. On my 944 there was a copper shoe that contacted a brass ring on the steering wheel. On the 968 there's a module that fits over the shaft and it has a brass ring that makes contact with the brass/copper ring on the steering wheel. I think I have to loose the 968 module and find/build a contact shoe. Has anyone come across this?

It looks like I'm answering my own questions now. There was a discussion on the 944 board and that had a link to 944online and the part required, also a 3 ohm resistor to keep the Airbag light happy.

You can make the 220 accept the ipod as aux connection instead of the cd changer, but unless you get some additional hw, it will not control the ipod. The viewing angle in my opinion is a no go, and needs modding.

ipod ? you mean, pollute my world with an Apple product ? i got 11 GB of mp3s on a USB. the alpine unit

Well, I couldn't pass up on a 996 airbag from ebay for $175...now I just need the wheel, clockspring, and to modify the hub.
Seems like there have been a few wheels on ebay over the past couple months for ~150-175...
Maybe over the winter this project will come to fruition. For now, I'm enjoying my 968CS wheel.
Question - has anyone been unfortunate enough to put the 996 airbag to use in their 944/968?
