My previous 92 had 54K miles on it and was on its original clutch. It was still working okay. My new 92 had the clutch replaced over the summer by the PO. It had 41K on it.

Was it replaced due friction surface wear or some other reason? 41K seems very low.

Chris,
I'm not sure. All I know is that I have the receipt for the work and of course, it grabbed a lot higher then my 54K original clutch on my other cab. One less thing to worry about since i only put about 3K miles a year on my 968s.

I was talking to a shop about synchros. It would save $1,000 if I pulled the trans. Clutch isn't much further in. That's in TN from a mechanic that does these all the time.

You also need to consider what other things should be done while the engine is out.

I have over 200k miles on my Cabriolet. Had the transaxle rebuilt to reduce noise, but I'm still on my original clutch. I did have something go a long time ago that made me unable to engage the clutch. One of the few times the car stranded me.

I'm at 92K miles. I'm currectly saving up to replace my clutch, rebuild transmission( 2nd gear syncro in particular) and getting the twin bearings installed in my torque tube.$$$
Might as well strikes again.

Most clutches on cars I've driven will go 100,000 mi unless you beat on them. It doesn't even need to be a special fancy schmancy clutch, just a quality OE or OE replacement.
Do a lot of clutch braking or racing or slipping the clutch for whatever reason and it's replacement time pretty soon. This has held for old VWs, Datsun Zs, 3/4 ton Fords and Dodge gassers and diesels, MGB, Triumphs everything even old technology gets 100,000 mi.

We'll see what the 86 does.

I'm about to hit 153k on my 1992, and as far as I know, it's still on its original clutch - no record of a replacement, but I am missing some of the early (<60k) records . I do show the clutch master/slave cylinders being replaced back in 2009 @126k, but that's it.
