Quick question on thermostats
Ok my darn Neon keeps overheating after 5miles of driving. So I'm going to take out the thermostat.
My question is what is the best way to test to see if a thermo is working right?
I've been told to drop it in a pot of boiling water, does that work?

They are cheap. If you are going to remove it just replace it.
You can put the thermostat in a pot of hot water. You will need a thermometer to read when the thermostat opens.

If it's a head gasket you will get exhaust gas bubbles in the coolant while it's running and white exhaust/steam out of the tailpipe.

Yep. Thermostat seems like the best bet anywho.
What kind of radiator fan does it have? If it's electric, check the fuse, relay, and the fan motor itself (i.e. start off by seeing if it ever turns on at all). If it's belt-driven, check the fan clutch. You can check it by wiggling the fan left/right while the car is OFF and if the fan wants to spin easily, the clutch is bad. It should be fairly firm.
Is there a coolant leak? If there is, evacuate engineering and put up emergency force fields. J/k, if there is, depleting coolant and lack of coolant pressure could contribute to overheating.
Oh yeah,
Good luck

I was thinking of checking if the fans are working also. They are electric and I might have pluged them in wrong. There is also a slight bubbling sound comming from the engine but it was much louder when I first started the car back a week ago. Actualy one of the tubes for the PCV system is cracked badly so smog is impossible. (I don't want to replace it, because I have no patiance left) I'm just going to call the local dismantler and find out what they will give me.
