Default It's a long story - my repainted 968

Back in October there was a Northern California Porsche drive to the Sierras:

https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/381095-feeler-post-4-pass-sierra-fall-run-sat-oct-6th.html

We had a lot of fun Saturday, reaching 8700 feet of altitude and taking in some beautiful scenery, although there had been SNOW recently which was earlier than expected. My round trip for the day totalled 500 miles but CalTrans had dumped sand and rocks [unsure if there was salt too] all over the pass! Here are some shots I took during and after the drive:

I got home pretty late, dreading what I'd find when washing my filthy 968. It looked like I'd driven through a mud pit! The next day while cleaning up the car I uncovered literally THOUSANDS of tiny rock chips on the bumper, hood, fenders, rocker panels, doors, and quarter panels! Even my 2 week-old windshield was cracked and the rear main seal was leaking!!

On Monday I had the rear main seal fixed and called the insurance company to file a comprehensive claim for my chipped paint. My agent was great to deal with. Even got to choose my favorite paint shop who gave the insurance company the estimate, so my 968 was in the paint shop by Wednesday. I stopped by frequently to drop off new parts that weren't covered by insurance [door handle and rocker gaskets, front grill, etc] and snapped some pics of the progress:

It took 2 weeks longer than expected, but yesterday I paid my deductible and got my 968 back from the paint shop and it looks terrific!

I'm supposed to wait 30-45 days before getting the clear bra kit installed. I'll be taking the car to Clear Armor Protection in San Carlos for this work and am trying to avoid driving the 968 too much before then. So another hard lesson learned: no more driving the 968 in high elevation, especially in the fall, winter, or spring! Now that the paint is in fantastic shape I'm determined to keep it that way.

...If you don't mind my asking, who did the paint work for you?

Auto Europa in San Mateo, California.

Steve, glad you like it though photos don't show nearly all the detail. Raj, let me know if you ever travel to the bay and we'll go for a drive!

What was the estimate the a/b shop gave your insurance?
I was planning on repainting the bumpers and side skirts on mine.

The bill was $6000 but that included the windshield, fenders, hood, doors, and quarter panels as well.

That is quite a nice insurance company. Did your deductible change? Or was that considered no fault? Looks awesome!

Well it wasn't classified as a collision so the fault/no-fault doesn't apply, nor does it affect your premium. I'm pretty sure that everyone pays for comprehensive insurance which is meant for just this sort of thing: theft, vandalism, road damage, etc. In this case it was pretty nasty road damage and the first time I'd ever had it happen. At any rate, I told the insurance company everything regarding when, where, how and followed exact protocol w/ my body shop, etc. They are the experts and showed the insurance adjuster all road damage caused by the incident and what was necessary to return to prior condition. It's no fun being without a car for several weeks - comprehensive does NOT cover a rental car - nor is it fun paying a large deductible! However I'm happy w/ how it turned out and will not be driving this car to any questionable places again...

Default only 2 questions

1. Where exactly is this stretch of road?
2. I have comprehensive and $1,000 deductible so it looks like I'll be covered too.

Seriously though, that's awesome.

Wow, that is a great price. I just had the windshield replaced on my 968 and that alone was $900 (thank you comp. insurance). Hard to find good body shops to do a total repaint as most just want to replace body parts and run them out the door. Had mine repainted two years ago and I had to search to find somebody to do the job for a reasonable price.

Looks great from the pictures.
