Default M030 cars....

Does anyone know how many M030-equipped cars were imported into the US? Was this package offered for all production years ('92-'95)? Was the package consistent across all model years? From Raj's comment in another thread I guess the LSD option was upgraded to the Torsen-type differential sometime during the '93 model year?

What specific components made up the package? Are the hubs and spindles different, as in the 951 S-spec cars? Or is it just a matter of shocks, springs, swaybars? Were torsion bars different?

The front brakes and rotors were different, they had different hubs and spindles for the setup. It's the same as the M030 944 Turbo S. LSD was separate from M030, and I believe the type changed midyear in 93.

MO30 option also included bigger front and rear sways, Koni's front and rear. Steve is right about the year change. Early cars had a clutch style LSD before going to the torsen.

Even 911 & Porsche World got it wrong recently, when they mentioned that LSD came with M030-it was a separate option.

Default What about 17"s?

Weren't the 17" wheel option (code 403) a required option for the M030s? Could the 16"s clear the bigger brakes?

I don't believe that the 16's clear the M030 brakes, although the 944 turbo S Club Sport rims did. I think they're a different offset than the 968 16" cup I's.

my early '92 has LSD, but I think it's a later gearbox.. how can I check if it's torsen or clutch?

Here is a good site that goes into great detail on the M030 option:

http://www.weissach.net/968_M030-Option.html

I believe the owner of the site, Karl, is a member here.

The M030 option required the 17-inch wheels on the 968 which are 7.5 inch front and 9 inch rear. The 968 16-inch wheels are 7 inch front and 8 inch rear.

You might be able to tell if your LSD is the ZF type or the torsen type by checking the build code on the transaxle itself? Im not sure were in '92 they made the switch though so other than taking the stub axle out of the transaxle to change your seals and peer a look see in there with a flashlight. Im not sure how to tell, with both cars up off the ground and a fierce jerk one way or the other does a clutch type and torsen type feel the same in the way the opposite wheel follows the direction of spin. You also might be able to feel the limited slip on the ZF type as they are locked up on decel as well!

So the 16" Club Sport wheels from a 951S will clear the 968 m030 brakes? Interesting...

I believe the 951S Club Sport wheels are 7.5 inch front and 9 inch rear which gives the extra space needed for the larger calipers and rotors.

Actually 951S Clubsports are 7" and 9." It's 928GT Design 90's that are 7.5" in the front.
The 7" clubsports have a bit more offset than 944/951/968 front wheels, that may be to compensate for the longer M030 front hub.

Clearing the M030 brakes is not all that difficult, the manhole cover wheels or 'flats' clear them too. I have not tried cast 7" wheels, they might be what does not fit. I'd be a little surprised if regular cast 16" wheels did not clear as the smaller offset should put the brake caliper in a larger-diameter part of the wheel, but it's possible.

Oh, and the rear brakes are the same between M030 and non M030 so any ol' wheel will fit.

Given that 951S brakes and 968 M030 brakes are identical (bar rotors being cross-drilled on 968 M030), CS wheels will fit no problem on a 968.

CS wheels are basically cut-out "flats".

Thanks for the correction.

When I bought my 968 I wanted to get the 928GT D90s 7.5 inch front and 9 inch rear but I quickly found they were pretty rare so I stuck with my stock 968 wheels.

Worse yet the 928GT wheels have holes in them for the RDK tire pressure sensors.
