Default 968 cam vs s2 cams

I have been running a s2 head and cam on my 968 turbo for the last 4 years, and the head gasket finally gave up? Will the 968 head/cam work better than the s2 cam head setup? Who runs with the stock 968 head and cams with their turbo?

thanks
Mike

Mike, it all depends on what engine management you are running and how the car is mapped. With a 968 head, you will need to compensate for variocam so your old setup will not be ideal. In theory the 968 head will make more power up top and maybe a little less torque down low compared to an S2 head.

968 head will give you little more horse power and s2 head will have better torque, but the best set up is to use 968 or s2 head with twin cam gears set up.. with out chain on center of the head, it's a time bomb if you use chain set up...

who does the twin cam gears? any pics? I havent had a chain problem in 4 years, of course the guides were replaced when we converted the heads over to the 16 valves. I could use the 968 head and cams without the variocam? I could leave it unplugged? I just want to know if its worth 40 hp to change over?

Mike
anyone do their own headgasket?

Mike, what kind of gasket are you currently using? Why do you feel a need for a custom gasket?
turbo_porscha, just curious, why do you consider the chain to be a timebomb? If anything, the 968 chain setup is much stronger than the S2 setup and plenty have successfully used it with turbocharging.
Thanks.

yes it's true that 968 chain set up is stronger then s2 set up, because 968 chain tensioner bolt right between #2 and #3 spark hole, but the s2 chain tensioner only hang on #2 spark hole, the pressure from the chain tensioner force the tensioner down that's how it break #2 spark hole ....(968Tcab) I understand that you have the s2 head for pass four year, but it's still a time bomb soon or later will let go.. once it let go it's ganna be a disaster, will have bent valve ..all kind the $hit will happen. it just a reminder, but if you still wants to use s2 head, I hear you can buy a braket already weld on s2 tensioner ... here is a link about 3.0Lturbo and twin cam gears set up.

Raj,
I dont need a custom gasket, ran the widefire for 4 years, have the new cometic gasket ready for install. I was wondering if its a weekend job to change out the head gasket? How is your car running? its been a long time since I talked to you, maybe 6 years, a week after you bought it in orlando? Did you keep it a 8 valver? I switched over and found way more low end torque vs my old 8 head motor.

DC,

David,
how is your mom doing? hope all is well? anything you want to add on the 968 head swap would be helpful, waterflow changes etc.

I remember you Mike, blk cab... correct.
I stuck to an 8 valve since I was trying to build a 968 turbo S replica. I ended up doing a conversion later with a friend using the S2 16 valve setup. I will send you a pm.
BTW, its definitely a weekend job at most.

that's right it just happens to be DC. I'm new in rennlist forum, how did you guys know? anyway, most of my customer likes to use cometic gasket, but I perfer to use widefire gasket, the reson is... if my air fuel mixture is wrong or just happen to have a bad gas tank , run too much boost, fuel reg. vacume line came off....any other reasons engine will run lean something is going to blow, I don't want my rings to blow don't want my piston melting, if something has to blow I want my head gasket to blow, that means engine still run on the lean side, if head gaset blow it's way cheaper then rebuilt engine.(cometic gasket it's not going to blow)... ..also I perfer run 7.5 ~1 comp. real 968turbo-'RS' run 7.5 ~1 comp. and it still makes $hit load of TQ. and HP.

Hey DC, this is Trevor...long time, no talk! Raj seems to always know the individual behind a forum alias so don't be too surprised...

ooo I see... Hello Raj how are you.... if I'm not wrong you bought some parts from me and you built George's black 968turbo 3.0L 16 valve engine, and you have a white 968turbos right?
