Default How many miles is too many?

How many miles on a Porsche is too much when buying one? There is a 91' S2 for sale with 210k miles at one of those discount used car dealerships. I don't know how they got the car, but the $8,000 price tag looks too high for 200k miles. Checked kbb and nada (both of which I hate, the black book is better) and they both said the retail price is around the 8 grand mark. (my collector car book says $5,000)

I think its safe to assume it shouldn't be worth more than $5-6K.

$8k for a 200k S2 is waaaaay too much. I sold my 130k S2 for $8500 three years ago. The overall condition of the car may not reflect that mileage - or it might. On a car with that many miles you could easily spend 3-5k just fixing stuff over the next year. High mileage Porsche can be a false economy. Be careful!

Yea, I knew 8k was too much. And the arguement about fixing the engine was my ticket to a cheap car. Man that would have been dumb.

Is this the car in Vallejo? That car has been sitting on that lot for close to six month now. If you look on Autotrader, you can find a 120K miles S2 for the same price.

FWIW, high-mileage car is the land of enthusiasts and wrenchers -- there's a lot of value to be found if you know where to look. Last summer I sold a 175k miles S2 for only $4k to a guy building a track car. The two previous owners were both long-time Rennlisters -- and almost every single mechanical issue was addressed by the time I sold the car.

While some engines are known to last 200K-250K miles...it is only reasonable to figure that many of the expensive metal parts (and occasional rubber) have deteriorated and if not "practically restored" the car will cost you an arm and a leg at some point not too distant in the future. I feel that it's better to get a well maintained lower mileage car. A 100K mile car can be a good buy but only IF it's been maintained regularly and well. A 150K on our cars is not uncommon at all. It's usually not the engine that wears out...just all the other stuff.

Local guy once wanted to sell a 944S for $2,500 but it had a broken rear deck window and about every part you looked at was bent or worn out. Even to part this car out would have been a loser. It disappeared. Don't know what happened to it. Scrap yard?
