PPI - Maryland - Key Items
I'm trying to help my father in law, he is looking at a 968 in Maryland (for sale by a private party).
Car is a nice example of a 92 cab, 6 speed, 60k miles and had some recent work done (brakes and new top).
What are the key/ most important items to have checked with this mileage?
I was harping on water pump and timing belt, A/C system, clutch...
Any suggestions based on experience by the 968 crowd?
(I am a recent owner of a 928, so any water-cooled front engine Porsche is a bit foreign to me).

If you are going to do a PPI probably would be wise to pull the valve cover and check cams and teeth for wear. Check records for pinon bearing replacement.

Three Wheelin'
The timing and balance belts are 60K / 5 year items. So if they have not been changed recently it is time.
The pinion bearing can fail any time or not at all. If the transaxle is not noisy then nothing to worry about for now.
The 968 Clutch is easy to change compared to the 944s. Something along the lines of 6 hours book labor. So if it is close to the end that is not too big of an issue.
Teeth sometimes break of the cams. I would want to inspect the variocam mechanism. Instructions can be found at http://www.968s.com/DIYPDF/Procedure... Camshafts.pdf
At 60K I would want to change;
Fuel Filter
Transaxle fluid
Cap and Rotor
Coolant
Power steering fluid
Plugs
Accessory belts
Heater Control Valve (these explode unexpectedly)
Might do thermstat while in there, cheap but PITA without proper tool
Motor mounts if there is a vibration at idle
I would change the variocam chain and sprockets next time the timing belt is changed.

Thanks , made calls on both the red one in VA/MD and the white one in FL. Both are $22k plus...maybe a bit high, depends on history, no response yet.
Found a decent one in MI, white with burgundy, great carfax, 57k miles, Porsche guy type owner, all papers, complete history, most years in CA, last few in MI, 60K service already done...fair price. Whats the worst, change the top to black, what does that cost??? $1800 to $2000 tops, maybe a bit extra with a boot? The owner is in a suburb of Detroit. West Bloomfield? Anyone live around there?
